Tourism is something lots of people do to see new places and enjoy themselves but they can cause major consequences in the environment.
Tourists can cause a depletion of resources that can cause some problems for the environment; they can also cause pollution and waste problems. Another way that it can impact negatively is the mass amount of tourists and the behavior of “these” tourists. With air and water pollution and the emission of greenhouse gases it shows that tourism also causes climate change.
Freshwater is used in hotels, swimming pools, golf courses and also water used by tourists this can cause water shortages and the delegation of water supplies. Some other ways tourism can affect the environment is they can disturb biodiversity, exploit water “ resources”and that can cause pollution, they can also affect air quality, also make noise and lastly they can degrade the land.
Since 1990 the tourism of Antarctica has increased and now it has a high carbon footprint. It can also cause damage at the visitors' sites and also disturb wildlife. Some more bad impacts are the pollution that has caused the depletion to natural resources and also the disturbance to wildlife .
Another thing is that the number of tourist numbers can outmatch the land's capacity, which can damage the ecosystems, and also disrupt or harm local wildlife which can lead to pollution. Did you know that tourists can cause twice as much water waste as the local residents? It can cause landfills and sewage water to overflow because of the incredible strain in the local water system.
Tourism can also cause damage, degradation and loss of the natural ecosystem due to the trampling of vegetation, the cutting of trees to make hotels, resorts and restaurants etc, and the increased traffic. Other things tourism can cause is overbooking, greenwashing and “trash”-dumping. There is also fast degradation, extinction if the animal loses its habitat and depletion tourism also attracts as target biodiversity hotspot which is a home to a lot of species. And it also comes increased emissions linked to transport and higher need of energy, solid waste, sewage, oil and chemical spills.
The construction of facilities may include: hotels, attractions and also roads, parking lots and facilities but that can also cause damage in the area. Even though tourists usually support locals, sometimes they can also cause a loss of culture. So in conclusion even though tourism can be fun it can lead to consequences to the environment so if we want to enjoy tourism we need to do it in a way that doesn't harm the environment.
