DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM WITH MONTGOMERY COLLEGE

THE DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM in Partnership with Montgomery College

The Dual Enrollment Program offers advanced high school students the opportunity to take college level courses and earn college credit at a reduced rate. Eligible WJHS students may pursue one of two Dual Enrollment pathways offered in partnership with Montgomery College (MC): Dual Enrollment/ Jump Start to College, or Early College.

The Dual Enrollment/Jump Start offers eligible high school students the opportunity to earn 3 or more college credits, experience the rigor and responsibilities of college classes, explore new subject areas and career options, and utilize an abbreviated schedule. Classes may be taken on a college campus, online, or at WJHS.

Parent/guardian, counselor and principal approval is required. Students must complete an MC Dual Enrollment application, submit college-ready test scores or grades, and have qualifying GPAs of 2.5 for seniors, and 2.75 for underclassmen. Dual Enrollment/Jump Start students pay a reduced rate for the first four classes; additional classes are billed at the regular MC rate. Financial assistance can be requested through the MC High School Grant application for families with demonstrated need; funds are subject to availability.

During the Dual Enrollment/Jump Start registration process, students accept or refuse the dual credit option; MC credit is earned in either case. If accepted, the MC course appears on the student’s WJHS transcript and the final grade is calculated into the high school GPA as one weighted credit; some MC courses may be used to meet high school graduation requirements. As part of the Dual Enrollemnt/Jump Start to College Program, two MC courses are offered at WJHS each semester. These classes are taught by MC professors, are open only to juniors and seniors, and have limited enrollment due to class size. To register, students must have flexibility in their schedules to replace two high school electives with one MC course, while meeting all graduation requirements. These classes are held 7:45 -9:15 a.m., one or two times per week, depending on the course format. Students use an abbreviated morning schedule (Periods 1 & 2), and may use the Media Center for academic purposes on days when the MC class does not meet.

Students interested in the Dual Enrollment/Jump Start to College Program should email the WJHS Dual Enrollment Program Assistant (DEPA). Steps to register for MC classes can be found at https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/high-school-students/dual-enrollment/index.html under "Admission and Registration Procedures."

The Early College Program is a competitive pathway where students attend MC full time during their junior and senior years. Eligible students are notified of this opportunity during the fall of their sophomore year. All MC admission requirements and program qualifications, including assessments must be met to enroll. Early College students graduate with an associate’s degree in a specific content area and a Maryland State High School Diploma. For more information, students should speak with their counselors.
