Hello Magnet Families!
Before you read the last Magnet Update of the year, we want you to know two time-sensitive issues:
There are no Blair classes on Wednesday the 3rd, so all students should come straight to TPMS.
This Saturday is the deadline to register for the Blair Informatics Tournament for coders. Big money prizes are available for coding teams (up to 3 per team). See below for details!
The 25-26 School year is coming to an end and we are still thrilled with all the amazing achievements of our Takoma Park students!
At the end of April, we had our WE SHINE night featuring lectures, performances, original movies, and more! Many of our magnet students displayed their Genius Hour projects. A great time was had by all who attended and we are very proud of all the kids who shined. Please see photos from the night below.
Many magnet science students did original research as part of the "genius hour" projects. Click the links below to see photos of genius hour projects!
Congratulations to Takoma Park Magnet Student Aydina Johnson! Her submission, “Engineering All Around,” was selected for the Second Place award in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) 6th-8th grade category of the 2026 EngineerGirl/EngineerTeen Writing Contest. Her award includes publication on the EngineerTeen website as well as a $750 cash prize.
Congratulations to Alex Spencer for again dominating our META puzzle competetion. He was the only winner for the last puzzle. There is one more puzzle. Can someone besides Alex Solve it?
Keep an eye out for Summer Work Packets for our magnet classes!

The Montgomery Blair Informatics Tournament (mBIT) is a competitive programming team competition geared at coders of all experience levels. In past years, mBIT has drawn hundreds of contestants ranging from new coders to world-class competitive programmers. Our mission is to share the passion for computer science and competitive programming with all who participate.
Contestants will form teams of up to 3 people. Smaller teams are allowed and will be matched with other incomplete teams if desired. To support all experience levels, the competition is split into three divisions: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Teams will try to solve as many problems as possible in the 3-hour contest duration. There is $1000 worth of prizes for each member of the winning teams to receive. For more information, please visit https://mbit.mbhs.edu/rules.
For students who can’t make it in person, an online mirror will be offered simultaneously. The contest will use the codeforces.com platform, which offers support for C++, C, Python, PyPy, Java, JavaScript, Pascal, and Kotlin, among many other languages. Contestants must have a Codeforces account to register and submit solutions. Registration is available at https://codeforces.com/register.
To learn more and see past problems, visit our website at https://mbit.mbhs.edu/. Please email them at mbit.organizers@gmail.com or BengHong_LOH@mcpsmd.org (our club sponsor) with any questions, and please spread the message!

August 3-7 * 9am-4pm * Mixed Arts – Printed Matter Ages 9-14
This week campers will try out some different printing techniques such as monoprint, collagraphy, stamping, and more! They will also self-publish a zine together, trying out different layouts and bindings. A camp for young artists and writers alike, they will read and discuss different zines and art books - and make their own!
August 10-14 * 9am-4pm * Mixed Arts – Inspiring Art Ages 10-13
Campers will observe select artworks in art museums in Washington DC, then return to Rhizome in the afternoons to work on their own related projects. They will make connections between different artworks, while trying out different techniques such as printing using gelli plates, assemblage or soft sculptures. Campers will practice taking a deep look at art, share ideas and at times collaborate on projects.
August 17-21 * 9am-4pm * Mixed Arts – Summer Art Experiments Ages 8-11
Campers will explore various materials, drawing from the season and our environment for inspiration. They may make found-object faces after gathering materials outside, sun prints on a clear day, or melted watercolor paintings on a rainy one. Campers will play collaborative art games like pass the portrait, as well as build on their own individual projects throughout the week. Experiments will include traditional art materials like oil pastels, ink or charcoal, as well as more unconventional mark makers such grass or sticks from the yard. We will look at subjects in the summer light to spark ideas and make new things - the rainbows in a sprinkler or soap bubbles floating past.
Steel City Codes is offering a cost-free
summer camp for students in 4th - 8th grade in the DMV through which high school volunteers will be teaching computer science to students.
The program will run daily from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, starting on Monday, July 13, and ending on Friday, July 17. The camp will be held virtually over Google Meet. Classes include Intro to Python, Intermediate Python, Intro to Java, Intermediate Java, Web Development, and Arduino.
Our camps mix a specially-designed curriculum with enjoyable bonding activities to create rewarding experiences for our campers. Students will also complete a fun final project at the end of the week! Whether you are new to the vast world of computer science or have
previously engaged with it and want to deepen your knowledge, Steel City Codes’ summer program is perfect for you.
