We are very grateful, in this month of gratitude, for the amazing students, professionals, and families at TPMS which make our community and school so rich. In this month's update, we celebrate fun of Halloween, the achievements of many magnet students and one TPMS teacher, and learn about how students can be mentored to work on their own unique passion projects!
WE SHINE PROJECTS
The WE SHINE initiative pairs students with mentors to develop their own unique passion projects—creative endeavors they’ll proudly share during our Spring Showcase. These projects are limited only by imagination; past examples include research on medical advancements, a solar-powered oven, yo-yo demonstrations, original music compositions, and more.
Join us for a brief virtual meeting to learn more about this year’s enrichment opportunities with the WeShine . We’ll review the purpose of the program, what students can expect, and any preparation or materials they may need. This session will provide clarity, answer questions, and help everyone feel ready to shine. We look forward to connecting with you online!

CONGRATULATIONS MATH TEAM!!
On Saturday October 18, seven members of the TPMS math team traveled to Virginia to attend the Thomas Jefferson Intermediate Math Open (TJIMO). TJIMO participants received small-group coaching from members of TJ's nationally-ranked math team. They competed in both individual and group events, where they worked in teams with mathletes from other local middle schools. All of our competitors enjoyed a fun and challenging day, and three team members received individual awards. Jason H and Mason W placed first and second in the individual round, geometry division, and Sophia S earned recognition for her speedy solving in the puzzle round. Way to go, Takoma!
CONGRATULATIONS AYDINA AND HER SISTER!!
Aydina and her sister Sufyana created a video tutorial for their Maryland Native Plants Search app they researched and coded to support our local community’s Green Team as part of the Sacred Grounds effort, a National Wildlife Federation program focused on creating native wildlife habitats to foster a connection between faith and caring for the environment. Aydina and Sufyana used resources shared by the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection to match plants and animals of the Maryland/Piedmont Region so their target audience of Maryland homes and businesses can attract native species and pollinators to benefit the environment. The app has been praised by the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the National Wildlife Federation, and posted as a public resource by our community to support Maryland’s goal of planting 5 million trees by 2031.
By clicking the link for the video tutorial and considering native plants when you are doing your own gardening or supporting your community’s efforts, you will help make a positive difference! Aydina would really love for their tutorial and app to get some views, so we appreciate you clicking and also sharing with friends and family to show online (in addition to real world) impact!

In Pre-Algebra, this month we started Building Thinking Classrooms tasks which has been a great opportunity for students to problem-solve collaboratively.
Attached are some photos I took. We are finishing Unit 2: Scale Drawings, Similarity, and Slope this week and moving into Unit 3: Proportional Relationships.
Reminder: stay up-to-date by checking our pacing calendar regularly!
In 7th Grade Algebra, we have...
Recent Achievements
Solving Systems by Graphing, Substitution, and Elimination
Analyzing profit from a business using a system of inequalities
Investigating systems of nonlinear relations
Current Unit
Functions
Upcoming Assignments
Quarter 2 District Assessment in mid-December
Important Updates
The unit 4 deadline is Friday, December 19. A detailed calendar is on Canvas, Week-at-a-Glance.
In 8th Grade Magnet Science, This month we have:
Learned about the periodic table of elements and how to read it
Learned about chemical bonds
Learned about how atmospheric pressure affects boiling points and melting points of substances.
Upcoming things:
Genius Hour Project Research and Paper
Chemical Reactions subunit
Chemistry Final Project
Magnet Geometry:
Magnet Geometry students just wrapped up the unit Lines, Planes, Angles & Transformations. We studied the building blocks of Euclidean geometry, and enjoyed working with translations, reflections and rotations of geometric figures. We also introduced the concept of proof and will build on that in our next unit, Triangles, Polygons, and Congruence. Our first task of the unit is to prove the essential theorem 'The interior angles of a triangle sum to 180°.' Parents, you know it's true but do you know why? Ask your child to prove it for you! 🙂
We also flexed our problem-solving skills with the first Sigma Math Contest of the year - there will be approximately one Sigma Contest each quarter. Also, the opportunity for students to challenge themselves with the AMC8 math competition is coming soon - watch for registration information in our Canvas classroom.
