Hello Magnet Families!
After an unexpected week-off from school, and with streets still covered in snow and temperatures at record lows, we are heading back to school with lessons, celebrations, and more.
Report Cards will not go out this week as planned, but a new date will be selected for it, likely next week. The TPMS Cultural Night will also be rescheduled so there is more time to prepare. Other events have been postponed as well. Please check out the school calendar for updated information: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/takomaparkms/calendar-index/
The TPMS Book Fair will still start as planned, running from February 9th to 13th. All information can be found here: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/takomaparkms/calendar-index/book-fair/?dt=2026-02-06
We also begin our week back to school with School Counselor Appreciation week, so please make sure to send a message of thanks to all our amazing counselors for what they do every day.
In today's update, you will find the latest goings on from Magnet Geometry and some pictures of the Polar Bear Plunge as well as our magnet team. There is also information about a cool summer camp you might like. In case you missed the January update, we've included a short video showing the cool programs from our 7th grade Magnet Computer Science Classes.
Ready for Spring,
Your Magnet Coordinator

The math team has been busy as usual! In December, a dozen members of the team participated in a MathLeague.org competition in Chevy Chase. Sixth grader Yoonsoo Kim won a medal, and four 8th graders (Coleman, Jayden, Charlie, and Matthew) earned honorable mentions. All five are invited to the state level competition. We also had several girls on the math team participate in the annual Integirls competition and one of our 8th graders, Joanna Liu, was part of the winning team!
In January, we had ten students competing at the Jackson-Reed Math Tournament in DC and one of the Takoma teams took first place. 🙂
In Magnet Geometry, we wrapped up the year creating origami models of an octahedron (which double as festive holiday decorations). We are now starting our work with trigonometry, one of the most fun and applied topics in our curriculum. After gaining a solid background in right triangle trig, we will learn how to apply trig in other triangles, and take a look at lots of interesting applications along the way.
Looking for your child's Magnet Algebra Homework? All Magnet Algebra 1 work is posted to MyMCPS Canvas Classroom daily. From the homepage, students click Week-at-a-Glance to see the calendar with links. There is also a Homework section in the Unit 4 Module with links.
All Magnet Geometry homework is posted in myMCPS Classroom in the Module for the current unit. Most homeworks are paper assignments given out in class, but if a student is absent or loses the paper, a pdf of the assignment is always posted in the Module. If a student is not able to print the assignment at home, they are welcome to complete the assignment in a pdf editor such as Kami. They can also view the pdf questions and write their answers on paper. In general, students have two nights to complete the homework - in other words, an assignment given on Monday will be due on Wednesday. It is essential that students complete and bring the homework on time, so that they are ready to participate in the homework discussion and feedback time during class.
All assignments for Magnet Science 7 can be found posted on the daily learning maps in canvas under the modules tab, along with slides for the day, and any homework assigned.
Book Fair and Multicultural Night will NOT be on Feb 6th.
Please watch this space for the new date and time.
