A Green Classroom is a classroom that meets 4/6 of the standards set forth by the Tilden SGA Green Team. These standards ensure that the classroom is environmentally friendly and that the classroom and teacher is promoting a Green Climate. Green Classroom certified teachers will get a certificate/award to hang up in their classroom.
A Green Classroom:
Encourages eco-friendly habits
Excites students about helping the environment
Educates students about the environment
Helps reduce human impact
In order to be designated a Green Classroom, 4/6 of the following standards must be met(Standards are subject to change):
Using Natural Lighting - Whenever it is sunny out, turn off the classroom lights and open the blinds. Then you will be using natural lighting and not using up electricity. This reduces energy usage.
Having at least two plants - Get at least two plants and put them around your classroom. The plants should be spread out among the room for everyone to enjoy. This improves air quality and is good for student mental health.
Bring classes outside at least 3 times - This can help students to learn to enjoy the outdoors and develop green habits. Past trips outside do count towards these 3. Outside, lessons can be different, computerless, and more interesting.
Having a scrap paper bin - A scrap paper bin is a great way to engage students and make them feel like they are making meaningful change. Whenever there are extra papers that could be used again(for example, if they are only printed on one side, or if extras are printed), these papers can be placed into a scrap paper bin. Then, when it is not necessary to use new paper(such as for notes, calculations, exit tickets), students can get scrap paper to use. This helps REUSE. YOU ALSO MUST ADVERTISE THE BIN TO THE CLASS.
Incorporating environmentalism into lessons at least once - One great way to develop a green classroom culture is to teach about the effects of pollution and global warming. This can be done in many ways that are related to the subject being taught. For ideas, reach out to the Green Team. Environmentalism should be incorporated into at least one lesson.
Hanging up environmentalism posters - Hang up at least one environment themed posters. These can be your own posters, these can be from elsewhere, or these can be from the SGA Green Team's Poster Collection. This helps develop a green climate and can educate about environmental issues.
