MYP Personal Project & IB Learner Project
Using Passion to Drive Learning
The MYP Personal Project (MYP PP) allow students to explore a personally motivating topic, either an existing interest or something new, over an extended period of time in order to create a unique product, while developing IB Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills by setting goals, researching, and action planning.
The MYP PP is student-centered; enabling students to engage in practical explorations through a cycle of inquiry, action and reflection. The MYP PP helps students to develop the attributes of the IB learner profile; provide students with an essential opportunity to demonstrate approaches to learning (ATL) skills developed through the IB Programs at SVHS; and foster the development of independent, lifelong learners. The MYP PP provides a chance for interest based inquiry, while developing essential skills for IB courses in 11th and 12th grade, college, career, and life.
Students have an opportunity to engage with a topic of their choice that they are passionate about! By channeling this passion, students can then learn new knowledge, find new interests, and develop new skills!
Students can earn 15 SSL hours* and .5 elective credit labeled “MYP Research Seminar”* upon completion of the PP. This looks great on their transcript!
It provides a unique and impressive achievement to talk about in interviews, college applications, etc.
It helps students practice essential skills through a real-world, student-choice task where they will inquire, act and reflect. Students practice both academic skills, such as research, as well as important skills, like time management, for college, career, and life!
*In order to receive these, you MUST complete the project and final reflection report

Who: Planned, Researched, Developed and recorded along the way by the students.
All 10th graders are expected to plan, research, develop, record, and complete their project.
Content teachers (Language & Literature, Chemistry, Individuals & Societies, & Health) provide lessons guiding each step of the project.
SVHS staff serve as student’s supervisor, providing feedback and encouragement throughout the project during SEL class.
Mrs. Becraft, SVHS MYP Coordinator, is always also happy to help!
When: 10th graders learn about and work on their MYP Personal Project through their content classes from October through February. Students may also need to work outside of class to complete their product and final report. A more detailed timeline is provided later in this handbook.
What: Students track their progress through their MYP PP Process Journal assignments, demonstrate their learning in a final product, reflect in a final report, and celebrate their work at the IB Showcase.
Where: The project is facilitated and organized in the MYP Personal Project Canvas Course & supported through lessons and Process Journal assignments created by Mrs. Becraft, the MYP Coordinator.
The MYP Personal Project Canvas Course is designed to help students navigate the Personal Project process. In the course, students will find:
Assignments to support each step of the project
Exemplar completed assignments as models
Google Slides for each SEL MYP PP Lesson
Lesson on Demand, recordings of each lesson in case students need to review or are absent
How: As the students go through the MYP PP steps, they will complete Process Journal Canvas assignments that will help guide their work towards each MYP PP objective. Students will brainstorm and draft their ideas in their printed Project Handbook, before transferring and submitting their Process Journal work through this Canvas course. At the end of the MYP Personal Project, your Canvas assignments will help you curate your reflections and evidence for the final report.
The MYP PP is scored using the three objectives, A, B, & C, outlined below. The final report is also organized by these 3 objectives, with students organizing their planning materials (Objective A) and ATL journal entries (Objective B) from their process journal, before reflecting on their project (Objective C). For each of these three objectives, students must include evidence to support their writing. The chart below outlines the objectives, the supporting assignments (Process Journal & Final Report), and some types of evidence students could collect throughout the project to include in their final report.
Throughout the MYP Personal Project process, students should complete:
✅Process Journal: The Process Journal includes the assignments students complete along the way to document their progress as they work towards completing their product and Final Report.
Evidence: As students work through the process journal assignments, students should collect evidence of their progress. Evidence can be pictures or screenshots. Evidence cannot include videos or hyperlinks.
Product: The product is what students choose to create for their MYP Personal project. Products could be, but are not limited to: video, slideshow, collage, cook book, play, website, animation, art piece, clothing, journal, and much more!
🛑FINAL REPORT: The Final Report gathers process journal work to create a summary of their project components, collate their evidence, and reflect on ATL skills and their personal growth.
Students must submit the Final Report to Canvas to earn credit for the MYP Research Seminar course.
The personal nature of the project is important; the project allows students to explore an area that motivates and interests them. Students choose what they want to focus on, which can be an existing or a new interest, choose how to achieve their goal, and create their own success criteria for the product. The project provides an excellent opportunity for students to produce a truly personal and often creative product and to demonstrate a consolidation of their learning in the MYP.
It then formalizes the exploration and extension of those interests through setting a learning goal, researching, action planning, and creating a product.
