MYP Personal Project & IB Learner Project

Using Passion to Drive Learning

IB Projects at SVHS:

Β An Overview of the Projects

The IB Learner Project (IB LP) & the MYP Personal Project (MYP PP) allow students to explore a personally motivating topic, either an existing interest or something new, over an extended period of time in order to create a unique product, while developing IB Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills by setting goals, researching, and action planning.

IB projects are student-centered; enabling students to engage in practical explorations through a cycle of inquiry, action and reflection. IB projects help students to develop the attributes of the IB learner profile; provide students with an essential opportunity to demonstrate approaches to learning (ATL) skills developed through the IB Programs at SVHS; and foster the development of independent, lifelong learners.Β  The IB Projects provide a chance for interest based inquiry, while developing essential skills for IB courses in 11th and 12th grade, college, career, and life.Β

Difference between the Projects

MYP Personal Project: For 10th grade students, the MYP Personal Project serves as a culminating experience for the Middle Years Program and is a requirement from IB. All 10th graders are registered for the project and their project grades are submitted to IB upon completion. 10th graders who complete all requirements earn .5 MYP Research Seminar credit, 15 SSL hours, & ATL skills to support their success in and out of the classroom

The IB Learner Project: For 9th, 11th, & 12th graders, the IB Learner Project provides an opportunity to prepare for the MYP Personal Project for 9th graders, or explore a new interest or extend their previous IB project. Students who choose to extend a previous IB project must choose a new goal and create a new product. Students can earn 10 SSL hours upon completion.

The Nature of the Project

The personal nature of the project is important; the project allows students to explore an area that motivates and interests them. Students choose what they want to focus on, which can be an existing or a new interest, choose how to achieve their goal, and create their own success criteria for the product. The project provides an excellent opportunity for students to produce a truly personal and often creative product and to demonstrate a consolidation of their learning in the MYP.

The MYP Personal Project uses passion to drive learning, meaning it starts with student’s...

It then formalizes the exploration and extension of those interests through setting a learning goal, researching, action planning, and creating a product.
