We heard that you would like to learn more about SCA youth programs.  

 

Conservation work with SCA is about building trails, improving habitat, and protecting natural resources, all while building your skills as a leader, team member and problem solver. If that sounds interesting to you, read on!

 

As a high school student or graduating senior, you can choose from 3 different SCA programs: 

 

SCA Community Crews

Participants on SCA summer and school-year Community Crews stay close to home, do conservation service work with other students from their community, and learn important job, life and leadership skills. In many cities, these positions are even paid!

SCA Regional Crews

Participants on SCA summer Regional Crews work on conservation service projects with other students from their region. Some Regional Crews camp the whole time, while others commute from home everyday. All participants learn important job, life and leadership skills.

Participants on SCA National Crews come together to do conservation service projects with other students from around the country (and beyond). Participants camp while working on conservation service projects and learning important job, life and leadership skills.

Attached is the position description as well as a preliminary application form. Once they fill out the form they can drop it off at my office and I will schedule them a meeting to walk them through the application process. 

 

Those that are interested as a swim instructor as discussed do not need prior swimming experience but it is preferred. 

They must work well with children from infants/ parent assisted classes to adult level classes. 

Must be comfortable in the water to demonstrate necessary skills.  Basics (putting face in water/ floating on front and back and general coordination of front and back stroke) we will train them for the more advanced skills. 

Definitely needs to be energetic and positive attitude towards teaching.   

 

Those that are interested in the life guarding course the prerequisites are as follows. class price is $205

 

This course will train you to be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer. Certifications are valid for 2 years. Attendance is required at ALL sessions in order to be certified. Students MUST be 15 years old by the last day of the course. Proof of age is required at the first class. This course includes a pre-course check. The first date listed is the pre-course. You MUST pass the pre-course to continue. The pre-course consists of:

1. 300 meter swim (front crawl or breaststroke).

2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only legs.

3. Swim 20 yards (free or breast), surface dive to 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to starting position, exit the water on your own in under 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Our innovative curriculum emphasizes both soccer skills and character development. Our goal is simple: to leave a lasting, positive impact on every child we serve. SOCCER SHOTS DMV: Soccer Shots DC/MD/VA (DMV) was established six years ago. Soccer Shots DMV stretches from Harford Co, MD to Prince William Co, VA. Soccer Shots DMV offices are located in Laurel, MD, Fairfax, VA & Lutherville, MD. Soccer Shots DMV works closely with Soccer Shots Franchising National Headquarters in Middletown, PA. Soccer Shots DMV offers programs at nearly 400 locations, serves over 25,000 participants, and employs approximately 100 part-time coaches and 21 full-time employees. Reports to: Regional Director ACADEMIC OBJECTIVES: The student intern will be required to handle and present him/herself in a professional manner, consistently arriving on time to assigned coaching sessions, and events. S/he will be expected to assist in the overall execution of a Soccer Shots season and participate in instructing Soccer Shots sessions (100% of your internship), giving him/her experience in coaching youth and working with parents. Assignments may be given to you according to your availability and location in the Washington, D.C. / Maryland / Virginia area. OBTAINING ACADEMIC/COLLEGE CREDIT This internship experience may or may not already be an approved academic credit internship with your school. Please make sure to notify us immediately if you are seeking academic credit through your school for this experience. With your help, Soccer Shots will work directly with your school’s registrar, academic advisor, or internship department to help you achieve academic credit for this internship experience. Responsibilities (can include but are not limited to):Coaching Coaching Soccer Shots sessions will be 100% of your internship including travel to locations The intern will be REQUIRED to have their own personal vehicle Prior soccer experience is not required. We only require the passion for positively impacting children’s lives. Safety-conscious, whose #1 priority is the safety of children under their care. Caring, engaging with each child through specific and positive affirmation. Organized, who plan ahead and are systematic in routine, conducting each session according to the lesson plan and working with children to maintain appropriate order for the age group. Responsible, who are committed to doing what is expected of them as the coach and "face" of Soccer Shots. Energetic, bringing Soccer Shots to life by creating a fun and exciting atmosphere that leads a child to smile and participate. Leadership/Management: Execute the overall scheduled Soccer Shots season PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT/WORKING REQUIREMENTS: Functions in a temperature controlled office environment a portion of the time. Work requires ability to sit, stand and walk throughout an extended work day (8 – 10 hours); position requires use of fingers, hands and arms on a consistent basis for keyboarding and phone work; position may need to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion; excellent vision skills (with or without correction) are required. The standard office environment has moderate noise levels associated with computer equipment, customers and phone conversations. Position may occasionally have the need to be exposed to an inside/outside sports environment. Functions in an inside/outside sports environment a portion of the time. Work requires ability to run, stop, stoop, bend (a physical, exercise type regimen) in a minimum of 40 minute increments per session. Position requires use of hands, arms, legs and feet and may include lifting up to 50 pounds on occasion. Moderate gymnasium like noises are associated with this position as well as excellent vision skills (with or without correction.)EVALUATION METHOD A performance evaluation will occur at the conclusion of the first term and at the conclusion of the internship placement. The evaluation will consider the following general areas of professional operations, and specific intern goals within each area: Core Skills Attitude Effort Initiative Productivity Communication Professionalism Job-Specific Skills Planning (Season and Special Event) Marketing Coaching Continuing formal and informal supervision will occur between the intern and the onsite supervisors. Clear and open communication will occur on an ongoing and as needed basis, at a minimum of 30 minutes per scheduled work day with site supervisors. INTERNSHIP STRUCTURE/COMPENSATION The Soccer Shots internship will encompass a minimum of 180 hours over a 12-week period. The internship will include twelve consecutive 15-hour (minimum) work weeks for the duration of the internship.During the first four weeks of the internship, the intern will be working closely with the Regional Directors on preparing for the upcoming season -- scheduling instructors, running demos, and promoting the season. Once the season starts, the student intern’s focus will shift to executing the program by coaching 100% of their total hours of work per week. The intern will be compensated $10/hr.
