Bell Schedule and Advisory

Students are enrolled in seven classes, a homeroom, and an advisory.  Redland has a seven period day schedule. Students meet with their homeroom teacher at the beginning of the year and then periodically throughout the year for logistical items such as locker assignments and report card distribution. Students meet with their advisory teacher three times a week on Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursdays for 30 minutes.  In Advisory students build community by engaging in custom made character education lessons, community circles, (SEL) lessons, and academic advising, and engage in Leader In Me Curriculum. The Redland Bell Schedule can be found here

High School Credit Courses In Middle School

Credit and grades for middle school students taking a high school course are awarded by earning a passing grade each semester. Students who meet this criteria, by earning an A, B, C, or D, will receive high school credit. The final grade and credit earned for high school courses successfully completed while in middle school will be reported on the high school transcript, but will not be calculated into the cumulative GPA unless requested by the parent/guardian or the student if 18 years old. Students/parents/guardians will be notified annually of procedures to follow in order to include such courses in their cumulative GPA. If your child is not satisfied with the grade earned, he or she may retake the course in grade 7 or grade 8 if it is available, or they may retake the course in high school. High school credit courses offered at Redland Middle School may include: Algebra 1, Honors Geometry, Spanish 1, Spanish 2, Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1, Spanish for Spanish Speakers 2, French 1, French 2, And Introduction to Engineering Design (IED).

Curriculum

In alignment with MCPS, Redland Middle School students engage in Secondary ELA curriculum StudySync and Secondary Mathematics curriculum LearnZillion.  An overview can be found here

Extracurricular Activities and Athletics

All students may participate in extracurricular activities. However, some activities may have a GPA requirement.  In addition, Middle School Athletics is open to 7th and 8th grade students who are academically eligible (GPA of 2.0 or higher).  Please visit our Extracurricular website here and our Athletics website here, for more information.

Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP)

MCAP is a computer based test and will provide students, parents, educators and the community with better student information at a faster pace.  Information is gathered that helps Mayland schools strengthen our instruction and improve student performance so that our graduates are ready to move into the workforce or a post secondary institution. MCAP will continue to assess the Mayland College and Career Ready Standards in reading, English/Language arts, and mathematics.

Special Education

Redland Middle School provides special education and related services for students with identified disabilities in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004.  The goal of the LAD program is to ensure students with disabilities receive appropriate support services while providing access to the MCPS curriculum and maintaining maximum participation in the general education environment.

Redland Middle School supports inclusive practices and differentiated instruction that will meet the goals and objectives of each student’s Individualized Educational Program (IEP).  Placement decisions are made annually by the IEP team.  Parents, students, special educators, general educators, counselors, and administrators use a variety of data to determine the appropriate accommodations, supplementary aids and services, and supports necessary to enable the students to be successful in the general education classroom.  In order to make the transition from elementary school to middle school to high school as smooth as possible, ongoing articulation among feeder schools occurs.
