Students learn basic hand-building techniques and glazing processes. Included are the composition and general characteristics of clay bodies, safe studio practices, craftmanship, and surveys of significant styles in pottery and ceramic sculpture. An introduction to the wheel may be presented. Ceramics 1B focuses on sculptural processes using a variety of materials and techniques. Writing and thinking skills are reinforced through journal writing.
Functional Fine Arts and Crafts is a foundational level art course that focuses on providing students varied experiences with Fine Crafts. Fine Crafts includes in-depth exploration in crafts processes such as basketry, fiber arts, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, paper crafting, book-making, and wearable art. Students will journey through each topic and develop an enduring understanding of the cultural approaches and historical significance behind these crafts while building a repertoire of crafting techniques that can be used to create their own art.
