Is this program the same as Summer RISE? Can I get internship credit for completing in the Summer RISE program?
No. Summer RISE is completely independent of summer internships; they are two different experiences. For more information on Summer RISE please go to their website. https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/partnerships/summer-rise/
I am going on vacation this summer during the six weeks of the Internship course, can I still do an internship?
Yes, BUT you will still need to:
attend the mandatory webinar the week you are away (Monday morning or Monday evening)
meet the hourly minimum requirement (75 or 150 hours over the six weeks)
complete and turn in all assignments that week.
There are no special accommodations given to students who go on vacation or miss any part of the six weeks. This is just like school - even if you are absent, you are expected to make up the work you miss.
Will I receive Honors/Advanced credit for completing an internship over the summer?
Students who complete the generic internship (WBL2014) or Apprenticeship over the summer will receive advanced/honors credits. Students enrolled in an internship for a pathway program, such as AOIT, Allied Health, Academy of Finance, etc. will not receive honors credit (those programs do not receive honors credit per MCPS directive).
Will you provide an internship for me?
No. We will post opportunities on this website and you can look through the MCPS Work Based Learning Platform Kuder to find more, but we do not have a database of internship experiences for you to choose from. Need help finding an internship? Look on the page titled "How to Secure an Internship" on this website for tips and tricks or reach out to the Internship Coordinator at your home school for opportunities and help securing an internship.
I have a part-time job this summer as a lifeguard/camp counselor/Chipotle worker, etc. Can that count as an internship?
No. In an internship, the primary goal is learning and gaining hands-on experience in a specific field or career path. Interns are often mentored and given opportunities to observe and develop skills that relate to their future goals. A part-time job's main focus is earning income, and tasks are usually centered around fulfilling the business's needs, not necessarily providing career-related experience. Internships have tasks designed to help interns gain exposure to the industry and learn professional skills, often including shadowing professionals or contributing to projects relevant to their studies, whereas part-time jobs often involve routine tasks or customer service roles that may not align with a student’s career goals. While both internships and part-time jobs are valuable, internships are usually more tailored to career exploration and preparation for the future.
Is there a deadline to register for an Internship or to secure an Internship?
Registration for the internship should be completed by the first day of the internship, June 22nd. Students will not be accepted after that time. You must have an internship secured before that date.
Can I withdraw from the internship once I start?
Yes. Speak with Mrs. Stroot if you would like to withdraw from the course after June 23rd.
My Internship will start before MCPS gets out of school for the summer (or it will continue past the August 1st end date). Can I earn hours for internship experience I get outside of the June 23rd to August 1st window?
Yes. If you start accumulating hours before June 23rd, you will need to track them and enter them in Kuder once we begin entering hours for the program. If you will continue your internship past the August 1st class end date, your supervisor must verify pre-approved hours.
