4th Grade

Center for Enriched Studies | Fox Chapel Elementary School

Welcome to Fox Chapel!

Home of the Trailblazers.

At Fox Chapel, we strive to be respectful, responsible, and safe.

In fourth grade, we are busy creating a community of learners, coming from as many as 19 different elementary schools to create something amazing.  Our program is what you make of it-a chance to learn, grow, and succeed.  We hope all students are driven to the idea of success and are encouraged to work hard to meet their potential.

Our Teachers

Ms. Fritschlanski teaches the literacy component of the program.  This curriculum is unique to a Center Program and meets the demands of the highly-abled readers.  Many genres are studied and novels are selected because of their integration to wider themes.  Ms. Fritschlanksi has been teaching in the program for over 10 years.

Mrs. Petrola teaches the Compacted Math classes in addition to Science and Social Studies.  In these classes, students are challenged to develop their critical thinking and reasoning skills.  Students will find themselves researching many topics including explorers, immigration, and the environment to create projects that display their new knowledge.  Mrs. Petrola comes to Fox Chapel after teaching at Jones Lane.

Curriculum

Our language arts curriculum is designed by the Office of Accelerated and Enriched Instruction and is unique to the Center for Enriched Studies Program.

For math, we offer sections of Math 4 and Compacted 4/5 and students are placed based on recommendations from third grade teachers.

The social studies curriculum is part of the Curriculum 2.0 roll out based on the Common Core standards.  The Center Program offers additional research and projects not written into the original program.

Science will be implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) including a focus on the Our Neighborhood, Our Watershed (ONOW) program.

Each year the Center Program implements a Gemstone Project.  This project integrates the all the curriculum strands into one.  At Fox Chapel, we complete this project through our opera experience.

Attendance

We recognize the importance of family when it comes to extended trips and are happy to support students.  However,  in accordance with MCPS policy, this will not be an excused absence. Please see the Fox Chapel Community Handbook for more information.

We might not be able to provide work ahead of time because homework is based on instruction for the day.  If homework is not provided in advance, we will work with students when they returns to help them make up the skills missed. In addition, these specific sections of the handbook may be helpful:

* Making Up Student Work
