The Forest Oak Middle School Library Media Center's mission is to support curricular instruction by providing staff and student access to a collection of print, non-print and electronic media, along with training and support that will promote efficient and responsible use of all available resources.
In addition, the Forest Oak Middle School Library Media Center supports reading for personal satisfaction by providing a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction print materials intended to engage the middle school reader.
Policies & Procedures
The media skills program is taught in conjunction with classroom research projects. At each grade level specific research skills are matched with grade level curricula. Some lessons and units are taught whole-group in the media center, some small-group in the media center, some in the classroom, some in the computer labs, etc.
The media schedule is flexible, in order to accommodate the largest number of people in the most efficient manner.
Students are limited to three items, checked out for a 3 week period. Students have regular access to the media center for book exchange through English classes, and may visit the media center at Cougar Time, during lunch, or at any time with a signed hall pass. Staff may check out materials on an unlimited basis. Destiny is the library system in MCPS. Search the catalog from the readers advisory page. Students can log in to Destiny with their MCPS username and password to review materials checked out or put books on hold. All library materials checked out are emailed to students' gmail account each week.
Students whose accounts show overdue materials may not check out anything until the account is reconciled by returning the overdue materials or paying for the lost item(s). A full refund will be given if an item is returned after it has been paid for.
