Through careful curation and weeding, our library collection acts as windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors for our students. With an extremely diverse student population, it is imperative that our collection is equally diverse.

Summer Teacher Institute: 2025 Teaching with Primary Sources

Library of Congress education specialists modeled a variety of hands-on, inquiry-based teaching strategies for using primary sources to engage students, build critical thinking skills, construct knowledge, and launch original research. Activities featured some of the millions of historical artifacts from the Library’s collections – photographs, prints, manuscripts, maps, multimedia, and more – which are digitized and freely available online.

Participants engaged in activities and reflected on how the strategies apply to their students, subject areas, and classrooms or school libraries. Participants drew on the Library’s collections to draft a primary source activity that they can implement with their students during the school year. Finally, participants will be invited to a follow up webinar to share their experiences implementing the activity with students.
