The students in the podcast express frustration and disappointment about what they perceive as a lack of action by MCPS leaders and staff.
At the beginning of this 2024-2025 school year, Dr. Taylor sent all staff the procedures for responding to hate bias and resources to ensure we all have the basic tools to create a safe, antiracist, and equitable school district. Resources were sent again before the presidential elections.
To make the resources more accessible, they will now be available on a new Civic Engagement and Civil Discourse website. New resources will be added throughout the year. The website provides guidance and resources for staff, so all students can participate productively, engage safely, and experience uniform rule application across the district.
All MCPS employees must know the procedures for responding to hate bias, along with guidelines for how staff and students can express themselves on social and political issues.
We all need to practice preparing ourselves to engage in challenging conversations. The Courageous Conversations Compass and Dialogue Support Sheet provide a tool to help each of us deepen conversations rather than shutting them down or Ignoring them. This short video explains both tools.
Interrupt Hate-Bias
Hate bias incidents impact ALL members of our community. To build a safer, more united community, we ALL have to take it upon ourselves to become Interrupters and Upstanders. The Speak Up Protocol gives staff and students strategies to disrupt instances of hate bias.
Protecting All Our Students Regardless of Immigration Status
In December, Dr. Taylor reaffirmed that our schools are safe spaces for every student, regardless of immigration status. Upcoming changes in federal immigration policies may impact many MCPS students and families. All staff must understand the following MCPS procedures, privacy laws, and resources for students and families.
In his December video, the Superintendent said, "MCPS is committed to working with our families and community partners to create a collaborative approach to addressing concerns tied to race and equity." Below are resources that all leaders and staff should be using for all engagements.
Whether or not you are a science teacher, this new Google Site is worth reviewing. Created by the MCPS PreK-12 Science Team, the site provides ideas on developing effective Anti-biased Antiracist Instruction with specific strategies to support Emergent Multilingual Learners.
The MCPS Equity Initiatives Unit offers a series of four lessons called Equity Student Dialogues to teach students these concepts and practices. The Unit also offers training for school staff to enable them to teach these lessons.
Watch and learn how teachers and elementary schools can empower students to become upstanders and not bystanders, to learn more about culture and the negative effects of stereotyping, as well as how to become more culturally proficient.
Different views around race, culture, immigration, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, and politics are impacting relationships, safety, and a sense of community in some MCPS schools.
To address these challenges, the MCPS Study Circles Program provides students, caregivers, and school staff with a process to develop the relationships, awareness, and skills necessary to engage in productive dialogue around challenging issues.
The Equity Initiatives Unit provides trained facilitators, curriculum, and coaching. We have formats for leadership teams, professional learning communities, parents and staff, and students and staff.
