The idea for the posters originated during a conversation in a recent Creative PLC meeting, when Anjali Wells (Curriculum and Instructional Programs) told us of the antiracist/anti-biased artwork of former MCPS art teacher Paula Liz, founder of the Anti-Racist Art Teachers collective and Maryland State Art Educator of 2022.
That sparked our interest, so Christopher Ortiz (MCPS/UMBC graduate) cast the web page onto our overhead monitor in seconds. He is so adept at anticipating whatever the group needs on the screen that he’s earned the nickname “Radar,” from the TV show M*A*S*H.
After looking at Ms. Liz’s collection of nine posters, the group thought they worked well as one and it would effectively support the MCPS antiracist initiative. We discussed the order in terms of content, color, and contrast and produced the current layout.
The file was sent to José Amaya (digital imaging) to prepare for our printing presses, expertly operated by Tim Costello (print operator). Tim delivered a thousand copies to Chun Yu and crew to trim, bundle, and label. Ron Parrott and the Pony delivered packages to all MCPS schools.
We hope you too are happy with these posters!
