Federal financial aid can come in the form of grants, federal work-study jobs, and/or student loans. The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which is administered by the Office of Federal Student Aid. Completing this form is absolutely critical, as it is the only way to qualify for federal financial assistance of any type, and you must have submitted it in order to apply for many scholarships! To apply, visit https://studentaid.gov/
2024–25 Award Year: The maximum Federal Pell Grant award is $7,395 for the 2024–25 award year (July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025).
The College Scholarship Service Profile (CSS Profile): The CSS (College Scholarship Service) Profile is a form administered by the College Board to facilitate applications for non-federal financial aid. This document is required by almost 300 private colleges and scholarship programs and is used to collect wealth-related information (assets, trust funds, etc.) that is not collected by the FAFSA. To access and complete the CSS Profile, please visit the College Board website.
The Maryland College Aid Processing System (MD CAPS): MDCAPS is a comprehensive financial aid system that allows us to process State of Maryland scholarship applications and allocate funds more efficiently using today's technology. To use MDCAPS, you must first create a student login profile. The profile creation process will request an email address. An activation link will be sent to the email address provided. The first and most important step to take on your federal student aid journey is submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form. Set yourself up for success: Know what to expect when you start the 2024–25 FAFSA form. This includes logging in, understanding the form, verifying personal information, and providing consent and approval for the transfer of federal tax information.
To apply for federal student aid, such as federal grants, work-study funds, and loans, you need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form at fafsa.gov. Completing and submitting the FAFSA is free and easier than ever, and it gives you access to the largest source of financial aid to help pay for college or career school.
Many colleges offer application fee waivers for those with financial difficulties. Contact your prospective colleges prior to applying to find out their criteria/procedures or speak to your counselor.
This is the application for financial aid from the State of Maryland for students who are not eligible to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The MHEC One App allows qualified children of undocumented immigrants, who qualify for in-state tuition, to apply and be considered for certain types of State need-based financial aid.
If you plan on attending a college or university in the state of Maryland, and are not eligible to fill out the FAFSA, you should fill out this application. The MHEC One App is filled out through the MDCAPS application website.
Institution Forms - Some colleges and universities also require their own financial forms. Please check the schools' requirements to ascertain if this is needed. If a college requires its own form, you must contact the financial aid office at that college to obtain the necessary materials.
Net Price is the amount that a student pays to attend an institution in a single academic year AFTER subtracting scholarships and grants the student receives. Scholarships and grants are forms of financial aid that a student does not have to pay back.
Net price calculators are available on a college’s or university’s website and allow prospective students to enter information about themselves to find out what students like them paid to attend the institution in the previous year, after taking grants and scholarship aid into account.
