Colin Heikes is a research scientist at the NIST and University of Maryland Joint Quantum Institute, where he works on the applications of neutron interferometry to quantum materials. Colin received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and his Ph.D from Cornell University, both in Materials Science and Engineering. Since 2016 Colin has been using neutrons from the NIST Center for Neutron Research to investigate systems where exciting properties like superconductivity, magnetism, and ferroelectricity are mixed together or emerge due to details of the structure, chemistry, and bonding in materials.
