What is Assistive Technology and How Can it Help My Child? Tips for Parents
The I’m Determined project, a state-directed project funded by the Virginia Department of Education, focuses on providing direct instruction, models, and opportunities to practice skills associated with self-determined behavior. This project facilitates youth, especially those with disabilities to undertake a measure of control in their lives, helping to set and steer the course rather than remaining the silent passenger.
Much of our work comes from research around three psychological needs: Competence, Autonomy, and Relatedness (CAR). We have found that when a person can experience high levels of CAR, it opens up greater opportunities to experience high levels of self-determination and well-being. Below is a video describing these three concepts.
The Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC) is the parent information and training center serving families and professionals of children with disabilities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. PEATC promotes respectful, collaborative partnerships between parents, schools, professionals, and the community to increase the success of students with disabilities.
The goal of the Virginia Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program is to screen infants, identify congenital hearing loss in children and to assure enrollment in intervention services. Infants who failed their initial hearing screen before hospital discharge should be screened for congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV).
The Virginia Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program provides information and referral to families regarding newborn hearing screening, follow-up testing, and early intervention services.
VCU Center on Transition Innovations
College Transition for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): This video series highlights lived experiences and advice from college students with ASD as well as parents, high school counselors and college professors who provided important supports during the transition from high school to college. In this video, college students with ASD describe their transition experiences and provide tips to other students with ASD who are thinking about participation in higher education. The video project was made by Virginia Commonwealth University’s Center on Transition Innovations with support from the Virginia Department of Education.
