The Caldecott Medal is awarded each year to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The award was named in honor of nineteenth century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott.

The Honor Medal
The Caldecott KidsReading program at Wolford Elementary is for students in Kindergarten and First Grade. The purpose of the program is to encourage children to read award-winning books and appreciate different kinds of literature.
In order to become "crowned" a Caldecott Kid, each student must read 25 Caldecott winners. The books may either be the Award winners or the Honor winners. Students must keep a reading log of the award winning Caldecott books read or that have been read to them by a parent or teacher. After 25 Caldecott winning books have been read, students will turn in their log to Mrs. Perret or Mrs. Drane in the Wolford Learning Commons.

We will "crown" students as a Caldecott Kid and they will get a special gold crown as well as recognition on morning announcements. We will also take their picture and put it up on our Learning Commons for display. Students get to wear their crowns every Friday.

After reading the first 25 Caldecott Award books, students can continue to read these award winning books (there are over 300 titles). For every 15 more Caldecott Books read, a student can have jewels added to their crown. Students get to wear their crowns every Friday.
