This whakatauākī reflects the idea that students must first build a strong foundation in literacy, in order to successfully navigate their learning journey.
By developing essential literacy skills, students will be better equipped to engage with content across all subjects and reach their academic potential.
KAUPAPA:
Students who select this course will be looking to strengthen their literacy skills to enable them to understand and engage with content from across the curriculum.
Students will develop confidence in all literacy aspects as the learning connects with contexts being studied across their other subjects. It is designed for students who find aspects of literacy learning challenging.
Students will develop the ability to comprehend written texts, write for different purposes and audiences, and apply appropriate language conventions to support communication. The course also emphasises the essential role of literacy in everyday life.
Particular focus is placed on ensuring students are well prepared for the Year 10 NCEA Common Assessment Activities for Literacy (writing and reading).
The Year 9 programme focuses on individualised literacy development, with an emphasis on both reading and writing.
Key components include:
Phonemic and phonological awareness: Strengthening reading fluency through sound awareness and decoding skills.
Reading skills: Practising strategies for improved comprehension.
Writing skills: Explicit instruction in sentence construction, paragraph development, and essay writing.
Vocabulary development: Expanding vocabulary and adding detail to written work.
Homework support: Time allocated for catching up with homework and classwork.
StepsWEB: An online literacy tool used to support individual literacy development.

The Year 10 programme builds on the foundations laid in Year 9, with a focus on preparing for the NCEA Common Assessments for Literacy. Students will concentrate on:
Reading: Understanding and interpreting a wide range of texts, identifying key ideas and information, making inferences and building reading mileage.
Writing: Producing fluent, accurate, and effective writing for various purposes and audiences.
Vocabulary development: Expanding vocabulary knowledge and making connections across different disciplines.
NCEA Readiness: Ensuring students meet the literacy requirements for NCEA by developing strong reading comprehension and writing skills.
