KAUPAPA:
The learning activities in health and physical education arise from the integration of the following four strands and their achievement objectives, and seven key areas of learning.
The four strands are:
Personal health and physical development, in which students develop the knowledge, understandings, skills, and attitudes that they need in order to maintain and enhance their personal well-being and physical development
Movement concepts and motor skills, in which students develop motor skills, knowledge and understandings about movement, and positive attitudes towards physical activity
Relationships with other people, in which students develop understandings, skills, and attitudes that enhance their interactions and relationships with others
Healthy communities and environments, in which students contribute to healthy communities and environments by taking responsible and critical action.
The seven key areas of learning are:
mental health
sexuality education
food and nutrition
body care and physical safety
physical activity
sport studies
outdoor education
Students in physical education will learn and develop through a wide range of movement activities, sports and outdoor education. Students will gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and to contribute actively to the well-being of other people and the well-being of their communities.
Students will take increasing responsibility for their own health and will learn movement skills in a wide range of contexts. They will develop the skills that will enable them to enhance their relationships with other people, and they will participate in creating healthy communities by taking responsible and critical action.
The course for Year 9&10 physical education is based around a range of fitness components and will be taught through a variety of different sports and physical activities. While there is an underlying theoretical component to the course the primary method of curriculum delivery is through physical activity.
Components of fitness developed include: Aerobic fitness, muscular endurance, muscular strength, agility, speed and coordination.
Other key units focus on teamwork, supporting others, game sense, leadership and self regulated learning.
Students in health will learn and develop through a variety of topics related to well-being and positive decision making. Through learning in health, students will develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and motivation to make informed decisions and to act in ways that contribute to their personal well-being, the well-being of other people, and that of society as a whole.
