KAUPAPA:
Students will apply a range of communicative skills in a variety of contexts that will enable them to express their thoughts in German with accuracy, fluency, and cultural integrity.
As well as developing key language skills, students will also learn about wider topics such as history, geography and food.
The Year 9 German course is a full year-long program that focuses on introducing students to the basics of the German language and its structure. The curriculum emphasizes developing students' ability to speak at an elementary level about personal topics such as themselves, their family, pets, school life, and hobbies. Students will be encouraged to improve their oral, reading, writing, and listening skills. The course will also include cultural aspects and traditions to facilitate comparisons between life in New Zealand and German-speaking countries.
Students also explore the following achievement objectives:
1.1 greet, farewell, and thank people and respond to greetings and thanks;
1.2 introduce themselves and others and respond to introductions;
1.3 communicate using days of the week, months, and dates;
1.4 communicate about personal information, such as name, age, nationality, and home;
1.5 communicate about location;
1.6 understand and use a range of politeness conventions (for example, ways of thanking people, apologising, excusing themselves, complimenting people);
1.7 use and respond to simple classroom language (including asking for the word to express something in German).

The Year 10 German course is a comprehensive year-long program. By the end of this course, students will be able to communicate about preferences, time, weather, seasons, physical attributes, personality, emotions, and interpersonal relationships.
The competencies acquired at the Year 9 level will be consolidated and advanced to equip students with the ability to navigate more intricate structures and manipulate language for their written work and presentations. The primary focus remains on proficient communication, encompassing both verbal and written forms. This course is an entry requirement for Year 11 German and lays the foundation for the reading and writing skills essential for NCEA Level 1 and subsequent Years 12 and 13.

FUTURE STUDIES / CAREER OPTIONS:
Most professional career pathways in Aotearoa want people to have had some exposure to te ao Māori. Examples could include - governance roles including public policy, education, criminal justice/law, health and medicine, and social services.
Most organisations now have roles dedicated to working with Māori communities and/or addressing Māori interests.
