KAUPAPA:
Control the processes associated with using and responding to English language purposefully and effectively through reading and writing, speaking and listening, viewing and presenting;
Understand how language varies according to the users, audience and purposes;
Understand and think critically about a range of texts;
Appreciate the heritages of New Zealand through texts written in English.
English is all about communicating and connecting. It’s about finding and nurturing a voice to tell our stories and developing an ear to hear the stories of others. Studying English and exploring these voices involves:
reading and writing
listening and speaking
viewing and presenting
As you work up through the levels of English, the complexity and sophistication of the voices you explore and use will increase.
COURSE CONTENT:
Developing a joy for reading
Developing written accuracy skills for use with a variety if audiences and purposes
Examining various types of written material, including novels, short stories, poetry and plays from a variety of contexts and settings, including Aotearoa New Zealand Literacy
Using imagination and opinion to communicate in a variety of contexts
Language analysis and critical literacy

English is a compulsory subject at Year 10 because the skills are important in a wide range of other study areas, at tertiary level study and in most careers.
