KAUPAPA:
Students who participate satisfactorily in the NCEA: Year 12 English course will improve in their ability to:
control the processes associated with using and responding to English language purposefully and effectively through reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and presenting;
understand how language varies according to the users, audience and purposes;
respond to and analyse a range of texts;
identify information needs, and find, use and communicate information;
Students who participate satisfactorily in the NCEA: Year 13 English course will improve in their ability to:-
Control the processes associated with using and critically responding to language to explore current issues in an intelligent and articulate way;
Understand and analyse a range of material, literary, persuasive and non-fiction;
Present ideas and arguments in coherent and extended form.
YEAR 12 PREREQUISITES:
15 Credits at NCEA: Year 11.
YEAR 13 PREREQUISITES:
Students must have gained 12 credits from Level 2 English, including at least 4 credits from externally assessed standards. It is strongly recommended that students have also achieved English 2.4.
A wide range of material and texts are studied such as the following: Novel, Poetry, Short fiction, Short Non-Fiction, Film and Drama Script
Reading and Writing
Creative and formal writing, novels, short stories, poetry and a range of non-fiction texts
Listening and Speaking
Analysis, construction and presentation of formal speeches and seminars
Viewing and Presenting
Analysis of film and/or television programmes
A wide range of materials and texts are studied such as the following:
construction of a writing portfolio,
Study and evaluation of novels, short stories, poetry, Shakespeare and a range of non-fiction texts.
Presentation of formal speeches and seminars, debate and co-constructed argument.
Research into and evaluation of different literary theories
A film study and a range of media texts.
Close analysis of a range of texts
Students can also elect to take Scholarship English as an additional challenge and qualification.

English continues to be an essential component of most study and career options. It is essential for gaining University Entrance Literacy. Details of UE requirements can be found at www.nzqa.govt.nz
The Year 13 course is recommended for those intending university study, especially in the humanities, but increasingly several other courses such as health sciences are demanding a high level of English achievement as a prerequisite. The course is a specialised one and leads on to university courses in language, literature, film studies and journalism. It is a valuable stepping stone to any profession that requires sophisticated communication skills.
