2019-2020 School Year

As COVID-19 forces us to learn new things such as social distancing, remote learning, and shelter-in-place orders, gifted children may display increased anxiety, sadness, intense feelings, and out-of-the-ordinary behavior. These resources offer parents some strategies for talking with gifted children about COVID-19 and in helping children work through and better understand their emotions, behaviors, feelings, family interactions, and friendships through this challenging time. Click on the resources below for more specific information on how you can help your child during this time.

Summer Opportunities

Summer Slugger is a fun, interactive, online course that uses the game of baseball to help kids ages 8 to 11 maintain their math and literacy skills during the summer months. Major League Baseball and EVERFI have teamed up to create a platform that keeps kids learning while they are out of school, and avoid the “summer slide” that contributes to a long-term achievement gap. Hello! My name is Renee Hensley and I am the teacher for the Academically Gifted/Talent Development students at Eastfield Global Magnet School and North Cove Elementary. I have been teaching for 27 years and I cannot imagine doing any other job. I love teaching and challenging students!

I am blessed to have a wonderful, supportive family! I am married to Kurt Hensley and we have two children. My son, Luke, is 22 years old and is a graduate student at Liberty University working on a master's degree and my daughter, Emma, is 17 years old and is a senior at McDowell Early College. For the 2019-2020 school year, I will be at North Cove on Mondays and Tuesdays. On Thursdays and Fridays, I will be at Eastfield. On Wednesdays, I will rotate between schools and attend some meetings.

Serving the families of two wonderful schools is a privilege. I love being an Eastfield Wildcat and a North Cove Lion. If you need to contact me, please email me anytime at the following email address.
