Mrs. Jenny Lanier holds BM degrees in Music Education and Saxophone Performance from Appalachian State University and a MM degree in Saxophone Performance from the University of Georgia. Mrs. Lanier has been active in the music education field for the past eighteen years. She has been an instructor, adjudicator and guest clinician of marching bands and concert bands throughout North Carolina and Georgia.
Mrs. Lanier has been the Director of Bands at McDowell High School for eight years. The band performed in the nationally televised McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago in 2015, New York City's Veteran's Day Parade in 2017 and the Walt Disney World Festival of Fantasy Parade in 2019. The band has earned consistent Excellent and Superior ratings at state adjudications in marching band as well as Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Concert Band. The McDowell High School Band has been represented by band members at Western NC All-District Band, NC All-State Band, Western Region Jazz Band and ASBDA National Honor Band.
Prior to her appointment at McDowell High School, she spent ten years teaching at the middle school level. At West McDowell Junior High School the number of students enrolled in the band program doubled under her tenure. West McDowell's concert and jazz bands consistently earned Excellent and Superior ratings at state performance adjudications as well as festivals throughout the eastern United States. The West McDowell Band has been represented by band members at Western NC All-District Band Clinics, Western Region Jazz Band as well as North Carolina All-State Band and North Carolina All-State Jazz Band.
In 2020, Mrs. Lanier was recognized as a quarterfinalist for the Grammy Music Educator Award. During the 2011-2012 school year she was selected as West McDowell Junior High Teacher of the Year. She served eight years on the Board of Directors of the Western North Carolina Bandmasters Association and has served as guest clinician for music camps and honor bands across North Carolina. During the summer of 2015, Mrs. Lanier and seven other NC band directors traveled with the NC Ambassadors Honor Band throughout seven European countries and performed five concerts over fourteen days. In 2013, she co-founded "Music Across the Miles", an international program in which she traveled to Haiti to work with village bands.
She is a member of the American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA), Women Band Directors International (WBDI) and Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity. Mrs. Lanier also actively performs with Lenoir Sax, www.lenoirsax.org.
