Secondary

The Secondary Digital Literacy Curriculum consists of four lessons designed to be completed in the first few days of school. There is one lesson for each of the core areas. Each lesson should take a period, but can be extended if you choose to.

One optional lesson is designed to help you set up routines and procedures for your individual classroom. You can customize it as needed.

There are two additional optional lessons that can be completed based on the needs of your course.

Be sure to make a copy of each lesson for your own personal use.

Lesson - Getting Started with Your Chromebook (Math)

  • This lesson includes basic information about using the Chromebook and caring for the Chromebook.

  • Please make a copy of this slideshow. Post it to your Google Classroom as an assignment with the "make a copy for all students" setting.

  • Students will have the opportunity to practice with different features and settings of the Chromebook.

  • There is an optional Chromebook Care Quiz that you may opt to use. You must make a copy of the linked form by clicking on the three vertical dots on the top right of the screen and clicking "make a copy." You will not be able to use this form without copying it first.

Lesson - Google Classroom Scavenger Hunt (Science)

  • This lesson reviews Google Classroom skills and features, including the home screen, to do list, the stream, classwork, assignments, comments, and drive.

  • Please make a copy of the items in the folder prior to using.

  • You will need to post certain things to your Google Classroom prior to beginning the lesson. The Pets slide show, Ice cream form, and exit ticket should all be posted as assignments using the "make a copy for each student" setting. You should also post the Scavenger Hunt Slides as an assignment using the "make a copy for each student" setting.

  • You may choose to start the lesson using the Today's Plan Slide, but this is optional. You should display the "Introduction" slide of the Scavenger Hunt Slides and briefly review the directions with students. They should work independently on completing the scavenger hunt. If students do not complete the assignment, you may wish to have them complete it at home. You do not need to extend the lesson beyond one period if students do not finish.

Lesson - Email Etiquette (English)

  • This lesson teaches students how to write an email for different audience.

  • It reviews situations that require a face-to-face conversation and conversations that can be emailed.

  • It helps students develop an appropriate subject line for an email.

  • Please make a copy of all items in the folder prior to using.

  • Use the Etiquette Lesson Slideshow to present to students.

  • Prior to the lesson, you will need to add the Mind Your Manners Slide and the Etiquette Quiz to your Google Classroom. These should be posted as assignments using the "make a copy for each student" setting. Please make a copy of each of these prior to posting.

  • There is an optional homework assignment and an exit ticket that you may choose to use if you wish.

Lesson - Academic Honesty (Social Studies)

  • This lesson reviews the definition of plagiarism.

  • It has students analyze scenarios for what constitutes plagiarism and academic dishonesty.

  • Please make a copy of the materials in the folder prior to using.

  • Prior to implementing the lesson, you will need to post the Scenarios for copying from other students and Scenarios for academic honesty handouts in Google Classroom. You should post them as assignments with the setting "make a copy for each student."

  • This slides presentation can be used during the lesson.

  • There is an optional academic honesty policy that can be created as a Google Form.

Optional Lesson - Setting Teacher Expectations

  • This lesson can be used in any discipline as a way to introduce new hybrid learning routines.

  • This lesson provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their distance learning experience from last year and set a goal for this year.

  • It should be customized based on the needs of the teacher's individual subject and course expectations.

  • In order to customize the lesson, you will need to make a copy of it first.

Optional Lesson - Opening a PDF in Google Classroom and Submitting

  • This lesson can be used if you are asking students to open and submit a PDF file by writing directly on it.

  • Please make a copy of the lesson prior to using.

Optional Lesson - Adding a Picture to an Assignment and Submitting

  • This lesson can be used if you are planning on having students take a picture of an annotated diagram or math work and having them submit it as a part of an assignment.

  • Please make a copy prior to using.
