EARTH/STEM is deep-rooted in the culture of Unionville Elementary School. Teachers, staff, students and families have embraced EARTH/STEM so much that it is synonymous with Unionville. Across all grade levels, teachers plan lessons and units through the EARTH/STEM lens and are committed to ensuring that EARTH/STEM is accessible to all students. The PTO advocates for EARTH/STEM and provides additional funding to teachers so that they can have the supplies they need. Strong community partners provide resources and serve as role models for careers in EARTH/STEM.
All of Unionville's teachers are highly committed to EARTH/STEM. Teachers and administration work closely together in the decision-making process and the implementation of the EARTH/STEM curriculum. Although we have a STEM Leadership team, all teachers have a voice in the decisions we make. The EARTH/STEM committee meets monthly. In addition, teacher surveys provide feedback to the committee and administration. This feedback drives professional development and program planning.
Unionville teachers meet weekly to discuss the integration of EARTH/STEM into the curriculum during PLC (Professional Learning Communities). They also use this time to update the monthly calendar of STEM units/lessons and to create new curriculum. In addition, teachers in the same grade level have common planning time during specials as shown in the Master Schedule. Teachers regularly meet before and after school as well.
EARTH/STEM has been deeply-rooted in the culture of Unionville and will continue to be for years to come. STEM is a priority for MCCSC and has been supported through professional development, resources, curriculum, district-level staffing, and funding. In addition, the Unionville PTO provides teachers with funding for EARTH/STEM related lessons, units, and projects. Also, Unionville teachers seek additional opportunities for professional development and do research related to EARTH/STEM on their own.
Students in grades K-6 are surveyed 2-3 times per year related to their engagement and interest in EARTH/STEM lessons and careers. The data is analyzed and used to inform decision-making regarding the implementation of EARTH/STEM. Teachers also use career interest questionnaires, skills inventories, and games to better understand the needs of the students and to plan activities around areas of interest.
Parents and caregivers are surveyed 2-3 times per year regarding the implementation of EARTH/STEM at Unionville. EARTH/STEM related events are promoted and celebrated in classroom and school newsletters and through Unionville's social media accounts. Our school has a vast network of volunteers, including parents and community partners who are eager to work with our school to enhance programs we already have or to help us create new experiences for our students. We also have a strong PTO and a supportive district that both value and financially support our EARTH/STEM curriculum.
Teachers are provided instructional feedback from our principal, who is a trained evaluator, through both formal and informal methods. Our corporation uses Marzano's Art and Science of Teaching framework as an evaluation tool to provide feedback on EARTH/STEM instruction several times throughout the year depending on the teacher's years of service. Unionville's Instructional Coach is experienced in both Problem-Based Learning and STEM instruction and serves as a coach, model and mentor. Teachers also meet weekly in grade-level PLC groups to analyze data, develop lessons and use critical feedback to make revisions.
All Unionville students have access to EARTH/STEM instruction on a daily basis throughout the school year. This is a priority and is protected from special programming. Curriculum maps are used not only by teachers in our school, but also across the district which helps to ensure all students are receiving the same high quality instruction in EARTH/STEM. In addition, all students are encouraged to participate in additional activities offered outside of the school day.
