Grandview's STEM experience is greatly enhanced by our amazing community partners. Our community partners engage with our students and teachers in a variety of ways. Some partners work with teachers on individual projects or quarterly STEM units, while others volunteer to participate in our STEM Night in the spring. Partners provide invaluable insight into the learning experiences and help shape our STEM webs for future years. Our community partners value students who can work collaboratively and solve problems, skills that we focus on here at Grandview. Our students learn from people in the field and are exposed and immersed in careers beyond those that they have heard about from family members.
Grandview administrators and teachers collaborate regularly with community partners such as Indiana University and the Regional Opportunities Initiative, Inc. (ROI) to refine practices and connect to valuable resources throughout the state. Teachers reach out on a regular basis to create relationships with partners in STEM related careers to support what they are teaching in the classroom through the nine week curriculum webs. Grandview's PTO has established a number of partnerships with organizations throughout Monroe County to collaborate on the annual STEM Community Night held each spring.
Grandview aligns its work with the MCCSC STEM Innovation Pathway created through a partnership with ROI and the Uplands Pathway Grant. Lessons and units focus on Employability Skills in the areas of automation and robotics to prepare Grandview students for the abundance of STEM careers in these fields across Southwest Central Indiana.
Grandview relies on relationships with several community partners to ensure robust STEM education for all students. Grade levels employ resources including the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, the YMCA, Crane, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Indiana University to deliver engaging presentations and offer off-site experiences that expand students' understanding of STEM in their community.
Grandview Elementary has several opportunities for extending STEM learning outside of the school day. Students enjoy opportunities to participate in Contig Club, Robotics Club, Cooking Club, and Running Club. Each of these extended learning opportunities gives students valuable experience in many facets of STEM, such as gathering and managing data, applying math skills, and putting the engineering design process into action as they cooperate with peers.
Inspiring and informing all students about STEM career fields is a priority for Grandview teachers and administrators. Grandview collaborated with MCCSC to launch GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science), an annual event that showcases a variety of STEM career opportunities to elementary girls through hands-on experiences. Grandview students attend Advanced Manufacturing Day, where they can experience over 30 different career options from 12 career pathways. Grandview was also a recipient of a Girl Powered Grant from the TechPoint Foundation for Youth, and works to ensure at least 50% of robotics team members are female.
