At Grandview Elementary, all instruction takes place through the "Lens of STEM." This means that all of our PreK-6th grade classroom teachers, as well as our special area teachers, consider STEM models of instruction and problem solving methods when structuring their lessons. Teachers work collaboratively to plan quarter long STEM units that include all subject areas, and special area teachers work to integrate these units into their courses. These units align with Indiana science standards, our corporations' math and English/Language Arts Essential Learning standards, students' interests, and community involvement. All students participate in these units with opportunities for collaboration, problem solving, and investigation.
Grandview Elementary has a strong STEM Leadership Committee of teachers, coaches and administrators that is dedicated to advancing STEM through programming, training, and community partnerships.
In the midst of drastic changes to our everyday lives, STEM has remained a constant for students at Grandview. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced teachers to adapt what STEM looks like for all of our students, whether they attend in-person or online. Grandview teachers will continue to use our curriculum webs and they have adapted them to a blended model of asynchronous and synchronous instruction.
All Grandview teachers have scheduled common work times with grade-level colleagues on a weekly basis. Additionally, Grandview teachers participate in weekly PLCs where interdisciplinary teams work to integrate STEM learning across content areas. Every year we provide a half day sub or fill in for grade level teams to review, adjust, and revamp their STEM curriculum webs.
Teachers meet each spring for a half day professional development where they switch out overall topics, add additional standards, revise community partnerships, and add additional mentor texts.
Specials Schedule
The specials schedule has been organized with a common time so that teachers in the same grade level can plan integrated STEM learning opportunities that go along with their grade level STEM Webs. This is a designated daily 30 - 60 minutes where teachers are able to meet with their grade level team, preventionists, and other support staff to plan for integrated lessons for each nine week period. Each year new activities are included and or changed from the year before.
Integrated 6th Grade Lesson Plan
This is an example of how the 6th grade teachers use their 9 week webs to create lessons to go along with the integrated standards and the unit of which the 9 week is focused on. They use not only their prep time to create these lessons, but often time are spending planning time together before and after school. This year they have also created many of these lessons and have adjusted them for our online learners as well. All teachers at Grandview are using their common planning time to not only review, adjust and replace portions of the web, but also to make them accessible to all Grandview learners, in person and online.
In May 2019, the Monroe County Community School Corporation STEAM Committee was established to create a corporation-wide STEAM plan that is in compliance with the current Indiana Department of Educations six-year STEM Strategic Plan.
Student surveys are administered by classroom teachers in the fall and the spring to inform instruction and to help revise our STEM webs. Additionally, a student, parent, and teacher survey was completed when we applied for our ROI Ready Schools Grant.
Parent surveys are sent out through Blackboard messaging. This feedback is used to evaluate and revise STEM programming at Grandview Elementary School.
Administrators perform regular formative and summative observations through the local evaluation instrument, iObservation. They are trained in observing targeted STEM instructional practices and provide feedback to teachers on specific indicators. The Learning Map below shows a list of indicators targeted to STEM instructional practices. All administrators are trained by the district before conducting iObservation evaluations.
Grandview teachers participate in regular professional development through MCCSC, ROI, Indiana University, and other entities to develop and refine their STEM work. Teachers and administrators regularly present on their work at conferences across the United States. Grandview PTO provides support in the form of classroom grants and an annual STEM Community Showcase.
Grandview teachers and administrators regularly communicate with all stakeholders using a variety of platforms, including Blackboard messaging and Twitter. STEM is a focus of regular school newsletters and corporation-wide STEM expectations and activities are communicated quarterly.
All students at Grandview receive regular STEM instruction, as our curriculum webs teach all content through the Lens of STEM. All students utilize their school-issued iPad on a daily basis to explore, problem solve, and communicate.
