McClelland College’s Music Program is built around participation in core ensembles, where students develop their skills by making music together. These include our Concert Bands, String Ensemble and Choir.
The concert band model allows many students playing different instruments to contribute to one group. We offer three levels, Junior Band, Intermediate Band and Concert Band, so students can build confidence and progress as their skills develop.
Choir is also a core ensemble and often joins Concert Band to represent the College at Anzac Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies.
A concert band brings together woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Students learn to follow a conductor, listen to one another and combine their individual parts into a complete performance.
A balanced band needs a suitable mix of instruments, with each section contributing melody, harmony, rhythm or bass. Conductors carefully consider this balance when allocating instruments and placing students. For this reason, a student’s first instrument preference cannot always be guaranteed.
Concert Band is McClelland College’s main representative band, bringing together experienced woodwind, brass and percussion students. Members play a wide range of music, build their playing skills and learn to perform confidently together.
Students represent the College at school events and outside performances. Members are expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances, including those held outside school hours.
Intermediate Band helps students build on their early band experience and prepare for Concert Band. Members explore more challenging music, develop their playing skills and learn to create a balanced band sound.
Students continue to build confidence through regular rehearsals and performances. Members are expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances, including those held outside school hours.
Junior Band introduces students to playing music together. Students learn to follow a conductor, listen to each other and play their parts as a group while building confidence on their instruments.
Music staff help students prepare for their first performances. Members are expected to attend scheduled rehearsals and performances, which may include events outside school hours.
Stage Band gives students the opportunity to play jazz, blues, swing and funk in a lively group setting.
Students learn to improvise, develop their sense of rhythm and build confidence performing together.
The band represents McClelland College at school fêtes, primary school events and Christmas performances at shopping centres. Members are expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances, including those held outside school hours.
Choir brings students together to enjoy singing a range of songs and musical styles. Members develop their voices, learn to sing in harmony and build confidence performing as a group.
The Choir represents McClelland College at Remembrance Day services, Anzac Day commemorations, College assemblies and community events at Karingal Hub and Frankston shopping centres. Members are expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances, including those held outside school hours.
String Ensemble brings violin, viola, cello and double bass players together to enjoy music in a larger group. Students develop bowing, tuning and music-reading skills while learning to follow a conductor and create a balanced string sound.
The ensemble provides opportunities to build confidence, friendships and teamwork through rehearsals and performances. Members are expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances, including those held outside school hours.
