The play was so good we were very impressed them all, especially Geordie and Emma.  What a lot of tricky dialogue that they had to learn. Congratulation one and all.

It was amazing to see them cope with so many words. How do they memorise things like that and not miss a beat? It must have been so much work going into the project. 

Such a brilliant show!!! Well done!! I'm amazed.

We were so amazed at the professional quality of the show. As soon as we walked down into the foyer it felt like we were walking into a rea theatre! The students were so polished and I had no idea that they can be so committed to acting.

PRODUCTION WEEK!!!

NOTES FROM THURSDAY NIGHT 10th APRIL

GENERAL NOTES FOR ALL OF YOU

• CLOSING NIGHT!!! I can't believe it!!! Sadly I don't have many notes for you today as I couldn't get a seat as it was SOOOOO PACKED OUT! There are only a few points and this is to do with having less room on stage

• Jake - when you are on the ground with the script, after the fight/chase stand up before you read the lines as people can't see you on the floor as you are too far forwards. 

• And Romeo and Juliet tomb scene only push the blocks out a little bit so they are in front of the red curtains so everyone can see more easily the amazing death scenes. 

• Was so fantastic to see you all backstage, so focused, supporting each other and having fun!! 

• TECH CREW: Great job making all the adjustments. 

• Great focus shown on stage despite people dropping phones, having phones go off and the rustling of lolly bags!

• EVERYONE!!! SO happy and proud of you for taking on board even more feedback and making the show even better. Every little change has made a difference. 

• Have fun tonight but don't go crazy and make big changes just because it's the last performance. Keep performing with the amazing timing, control, change in pace and focus that you ALL have show me. 

• I will be filming the play tonight. I would love for us to hold a screening one afternoon after school next term for you to enjoy it and appreciate what a stellar effort you all put in. I'll keep you posted on this. 

PLANS FOR AFTER THE PERFORMANCE

8.30 - 8.40pm: Performance ends

8.40 - 9.00pm: Get changed and say hello to all your fans in the foyer. Hang ALL costume items back into your pink costume bag and make sure it is exactly like it was when it was given to you - don't mess up any items, be sure it's all yours etc. 

9.00 - 9.40pm: Sit back down in theatre for BUMP OUT instructions. 

• This should only take about 20-30mins if we all help. 

• How it works, is you sit in the front row and I'll assign you jobs and when you are done come back and I'll tell you what's next.

• Please no one leave without helping, we are a team and if we all help it will be done very quickly. 

• Bump out will involve taking all the costumes and loading them into my car as I need to take them back to Sydney tomorrow. 

• ALL the props will be put into storage containers. I know it's tempting but please don't take anything as a memento from the play. 

• 2 people to clean and sort the big costume room. 

• 2 people to take all the tape of prop tables and pack them away

• There are a bunch of other small jobs that I will assign. 

9.40pm-10.00pm: Everyone back in the theatre. Finish signing/writing in each other's cards. Goodbyes and HAPPY HOLIDAYS! 

We are aiming to close the theatre doors and everyone out at 10.00pm so if you are getting picked up let your peeps know it's 10.00pm.

NOTES FROM WEDNESDAY NIGHT 9th APRIL

GENERAL NOTES FOR ALL OF YOU

• Awesome and amazing effort tonight. I am so so so proud of you all as you have taken on board all my notes and feedback and applied these to your performance. 

• Last night had such incredible energy and was much faster especially ACT II which was fab! 

• Tonight can be traditionally "the slump" show as nerves are not as high, and you are all pretty tired so really important to keep focused and support each other. Lots of VIP guests attending tonight and I think it will also be sold out so YAY!

• Thank you for not adlibbing and staying true to the script

• Still need to share more lines with the audience

• Scene transitions are still really great. BUT stage right (oval side) is often not set up correctly. Blocks and curtain need to be much further back. 

• Please make sure blocks are always turned the right way around and not showing the back

• If you think a block or curtain is not in the right place just move it during the scene.

• Again, if you have made mistakes please check and note where and when they were made, check in with others to see if they need to also be aware.

• Still a bit too much side acting but better

• Remember to wait for the laughter before you say your next line and if you say it, say it again when the laughter stops so we don't lose the line. 

• Wait for applause to end before saying lines

• As much as possible try to be quieter on the stairs, at times it is like stopping elephants. I know it's hard but try to be more light footed but safety first

• Emmy as a general note need to project more in your "quieter" scenes

• Geordie, a bit too much face palming! Just use it once or twice at the right moment

• ACT 1 had fantastic energy and pace

• Bed blocks heaps better more front on. Great work Jake. 

        ACT ONE

• Great work for pre-show music, lights and announcements. Huge improvement with the very opening scene with moving in and out with breath it looked awesome! 

• Nailed the first scene again and better reactions from the group 

• TECH CREW: first scene lights need to be up a little brighter

• Lovely first scene together Archie and Geordie still awesome, close to perfect! 

• Again coal scene was awesome and heaps faster great job in this scene Nick, share more lines with the audience

• TECH CREW: Beginning of Queen court scene needed to be a lot brighter it was too dark

• Fantastic energy Will C but Alex and Will need to be a bit faster getting on stage, you were a little late

• Don't forget to try and laugh and giggle Alex when you are prancing around and having fun

• Queen court scene was awesome

• Lila look up and say some of your lines to the audience in your first scene

• First tavern scene still a bit of hesitation, come on in a lot faster and with more energy

• Great energy and dancing when the scene kicked in

• Rory making pretend cocktails is hilarious! 

• I was in the middle of writing " great job you didn't drop the cups" then someone dropped the cups - sorry I cursed you! But much better as only 1 cup dropage! 

• TECH CREW: Archie monologue lights need to change much faster

• Great work again Archie and as I mentioned, experiment with movement tonight and address the audience on both sides. 

• Auditions were a bit off as someone didn't move the white curtain centre stage. Be brave enough to improvise and move the screen instead of staying where the screen is. All auditions still need to be more face on to the audience, share it with us. Much better Jake, you took on this note and it was great!

• Eddie "tears of fear" or something like that was lost as people were laughing so just wait

• Rory turn to face the front more in your audition scene

• Beautiful line delivery Emmy in audition scene

• Emmy, when you say your name is Thomas Kent say it in a really deep voice

• Geordie, love the strength and sharpness of the line "Hands off"

• Great work Xav to just commit when changing the curtains - curtains can still be pushed further back for ball scene

• Great first scene OHall and Jack! 

• Lila say "Master Kent" to the audience and share this moment more with us before Archie and Geordie go into the ball

• TECH CREW: Second music track for the ball a little quieter

• YAY OHall! You can dance and look up! Great job

• More vocals Lila when Emmy is telling you about the plot, really go for it

• Someone forgot to move the blocks away for the balcony scene so don't forget tonight and if it happens again, just move them as part of the scene as it made it really squashy, best for you to move them out of the way Archie if it happens again. 

• Careful not to touch black curtain on back wall as it can easily open

• Killer night time balcony scene

• Great job Emmy when you waited for the laughter to stop

• Lila scream bigger and out to the audience too like you are warning us too

• Great line delivery Nick, "now that's funny"

• Cooper you are hilarious

• Jake don't worry about when you stuffed your lines, great recovery! 

• Nick be super careful when jumping up on the block, you can take more time, would hate for you to fall

• Great improvement Will B with slowing down your lines!!  great connection to audience

• Well done Charlie for looking more at the audience

• Emmy when you say out of her favour really needs to be over the top so it makes sense for Geordie to stop you

• TECH CREW: Will don't bring the lights up during Emmy's Shall I Compare Thee

• Great line delivery OHall

• Emmy try to do the slap so we can hear it, maybe just slow it down? 

• Loved the entire scene of the wedding looked fantastic

• Nailed it again Soph and Holly. Holly when you say the line "packed in together" make a real effort to say the line to the audience as they too are really packed in! Loved that you moved back enough to run forwards at the end of the scene

• Fantastic rehearal scene with the dog

• Good recovery Nick and don't worry if lines were messed up

• TECH CREW: Music needs to be turned down a bit during the rehearsal scenes with the 3 different kisses. 

• Zac when high pitched still need to project more I know it's hard!!

• Good recovery Emmy up the stairs

• Cooper wait for laughter "I weren't that bad" as it's such an awesome line

• Boat scene again was killer and fab timing Geordie with throwing the manuscript up high and splash looked awesome

• TECH CREW: Music in boat scene a tiny bit lower

• Beautiful final scene - can be a touch faster and project more

• Emmy look up more to the audience and share the words with us

• TECH CREW: Josh we couldn't hear interval announcement so don't bring up lights until after annoucement, this way people will be quieter so wait till people are quiet then do annoucement and then turn lights to CINEMA mode

ACT TWO

• Set up the stage for ACT II

• Blocks and curtain were in the wrong place

• Lila super funny!

• Blocks on stage right need to be in a line not left 3 in front of each other

• In court scene Soph, share more lines with the audience

• Heaps better vocal delivery Will C - lots of contrast, interest and variation

• Soph, don't shove people out of the way when you exit as the Queen wouldn't touch people, just look at them with disgust and they will move

• Charlie look up and say the line, traitor, thief etc to the audience and Henslow rehearsing my play, shock and to the audience

• Blocks need to be pushed back more

• Sword fight was too quiet

• TECH CREW: Fade the music at the end of the fight not a straight cut

• Much better Nick! Great change breathing, build up and change of pace

• It's 5 o'clock somewhere Jake great one liner! 

• Second tavern scene heaps better

• Beautiful monologue Holly

• Candle didn't turn on, so Nick I think it's ok to turn it on when you come on and place it behind the block and then it's 

• If blocks are in the wrong place, move them in character they were too squishy in the  tavern scene

• Even better drunk scene OHall. Remind me to tell you about the stocking idea for this scene.

• OHall wait for the thunder to  pass before you say your line.

• Again, awesome ghost scene love it! 

• Emmy, more joy and relief when Geordie wakes you up and hug him

• Hair was heaps better Emmy so style the same way and if it becomes lose in ACT 2 just tuck behind ear

• Much better to face the audience in R&J script reading and share more with the audience

• Geordie check lines for transition into rehearal good recovery

• For get out of my way OHall, Eddie has to actually be in your way! 

• More voice reaction needed for fight too quiet

• There was no reaction from actors when Will C says "this theatre is closed" Needs to be!! 

• ACT II second half so much better and so much pace! 

• Much better fire up scene Charlie, try to be faster still, and even more reactions from everyone else, still haven't reached the peak energy needed

• Emmy such a beautiful line with deep feeling, "I just wanted to be an actor"

• Nick I adore how you walk on stage with your red hat. Say everything alright to actors and the audience

• When Charlie says the Curtain is yours, do a big yay cheers, not a hazah and then hazah at the end like you already do

• Rory for SAVE OF THE DAY for money for Jack. Jack that money is cursed but I have faith that you will nail it tonight!!!

• Lila really be OVER THE TOP when you are trying to stop OHall from coming down the stairs

• Great freeze frame

• Zac beautiful monologue

• Not adlibbing a lot and took on feedback so great! 

• R & J scene was too slow to start but good recovery

• Oscar S thumbs up was great and best performance yet with the build up of confidence in your character for the prologue

• Loved the pace R & J scene

• Great work Jackson, big improvement with your line delivery

• Teat! Hilarious

• R & J lady capulet scene check lines, it was a bit of a mess and caused Alex and Will C to come on late

• Spot attacking was hilarious

• Careful on the stairs Will C

• Good recovery Charlie, check your lines about we will be remembered etc before the play continues

• Beautiful tomb scene, Emmy can project even more

• Kiss thy lips, warm etc. Emmy you need to pretend to kiss them otherwise does not make sense

• The bows were so much fun. Rory again, killing it with his bad self with no dance partner

• TECH CREW: Music for the Queen monologue was too loud and make sure it plays for the entire monologue 

• Great work Soph projecting up stage could really hear. Step into the light at the front if you can't feel it on your face

• Great work Emmy for taking on the note about bowing/curtsey

• Sophie loved your line delivery of your final line and the eye roll.

• Geordie did you forget to give Emmy the script and do that part?

• TECH CREW: Bring up the lights faster as ran out of music for the bows

• EVERYONE hold the freeze at the final bow and wait for lights to come down. TECH CREW fade the lights a bit faster.

NOTES FROM OPENING NIGHT 

Tuesday 9th April

• CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE ON OPENING NIGHT!!! People are raving about the show this morning. I am so proud of you all. Congrats to those of you who enjoyed your very first openning night!!! Your first production. It is an amazing accomplishment and you should be very proud of yourselves - all of you. 

• For an opening night show it was great but there is A LOT we can fix to make it even better. 

GENERAL NOTES FOR ALL OF YOU

1.  DON'T ADLIB AND MAKE UP STUFF IF IT'S NOT NECESSARY. PLEASE HONOUR THE SCRIPT. THE PLAY IS LONG ENOUGH! ONLY ADLIB IF YOU NEED TO HELP IF SOMEONE FORGETS LINES OR DURING SCENE CHANGES IF THERE IS DEAD SPACE BUT OTHER THAN THAT PLEASE DON'T ADD ANYTHING ELSE. 

2. NEED TO BRING IT BACK A BIT IN TERMS OF SHOUTING. IF YOU HAVE A CHARACTER THAT HAS AN ANGRY MOMENT LISTEN TO THE ADVICE OF WILL SHAKESPEARE! "DON'T SPEND IT ALL AT ONCE....WHAT WILL YOU DO IN ACT TWO...." NEED TO BUILD UP AND HAVE MORE LIGHT AND SHADE IN THESE MOMENTS. 

3. THIS WAS BETTER BUT NEEDS TO BE DONE EVEN MORE - SHARE THE LINES WITH THE AUDIENCE TOO AND THIS WILL HELP ENGAGE THEM.

4. SCENE TRANSITIONS ARE SOOOO MUCH BETTER AND SMOOTHER WELL DONE EVERYONE.

5. IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE WITH COMING ON AT THE WRONG TIME COVER IT UP AND DON'T DO IT AGAIN IN THE NEXT PERFORMANCES. 

6. LOOK AT YOUR SCRIPT AND MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE AND WHEN YOU MADE ANY MISTAKES AND TRY NOT TO REPEAT. 

7.  WELL DONE EVERYONE FOR WORKING SAFELY ON THE STAIRS. KEEP BEING FOCUSED WHEN GOING UP AND DOWN.

8. ACT 2 FELT VERY SLOW. LET'S SPEED IT UP IN A CONTROLLED WAY! 

9. TOO MUCH SIDE ON ACTING - TURN BODIES A LOT TO THE FRONT AND DON'T FORGET THE AUDIENCE

10. EMAIL ME SHOUT OUTS FOR BEST ON GROUND BEFORE TONIGHT.

11. TECH CREW: WHEN BRINGING LIGHTS UP FOR INTERVAL AND END OF SHOW PLEASE ONLY USE CINEMA MODE AND FULL HOUSE LIGHTS WAY TOO BRIGHT. 

12. GREAT JOB WITH THE PROPS I THINK EVERYONE HAD A PROP IN HAND WHEN NEEDED SO FAB WORK.

ACT ONE

• Fantastic line delivery Eddie, amazing energy

• The transition into the first Queen scene was great! 

• Excellent comic timing and energy Will and Alex and great coming coming in earlier for that scene

• Jake you need to put Spot on the ground more upstage for the "trick" as last 3 rows couldn't see

• First Queen scene was brilliant 

• Great transition from court scene to Viola bedroom

• Lila project heaps more in your first scene

• Eddie your energy for first tavern scene was nuts. Everyone else go for it. 

• DON'T DROP THE CUPS!!!!!!! 

• Eddie you made up a bunch of lines in the tavern. Everyone check their lines for this scene. And check the dance moves and movement. 

• Great facial expressions Geordie

• Lovely monologue Archie - good change of pace. You can still afford to project your voice even more. Great connection to the audience. Freeze frame was great everyone. 

• The audition scene needs to be a bit faster it's too slow overall but lots of effective comedy moments. Oscar S the suttering went for too long but sounded great so just speed it up. 

• Jake for your audition speed it up a lot more and face the audience for most of the time and only turn your head to speak to Geordie and Eddie. The heart beat got a good laugh. 

• Nice use of pause and reaction Emmy when thinking of your fake Thomas Kent name

• The let me see your hat...no line was great, funny due to the pause and look

• Audition scene into the tavern transition was super smooth great work!

• White curtains need to be pushed much further back up stage for the ball scene so there is more room

• Good recovery line Lila when waiting for Emmy

• Much better timing OHall and Jack to get over the balcony and down the stairs in time. 

• OHall look up when in line dance as you keep looking at your feet

• Jake and Cooper I know you want to be on stage but only come on when you need to!! Lila looking at you like WTF are you doing?

• Lila more verbal reactions to Emmy reading the plot outline like ooooo, ahhhhh, hmmmmm. 

• Amazing balcony scene, Archie wait to say your next line after Geordie says "I'm just getting somewhere" as there was lots of laughter

• Geordie don't forget to almost shout your lines up to Viola on the balcony

• Great experimentation in line delivery with Shall I Compare thee and funny moments

• HEN-SLOW is bloody hilarious Nick

• Geordie don't forget the gesture of the nose/finger onto Jake when rejecting him

• Love the energy Will B when you came in. Really important for a lot of your lines to SLOW DOWN so we can hear each line clearly but don't lose the energy.

• Great rehearsal scene

• "Stop that you" line Charlie was very funny

• TECH CREW: Emmy's Shall I Compare thee was too dark, please add more light. Great music volume for this scene. Was beautiful. One of my fav moments in the play. 

• Great physical comedy Lila and good recovery with taking off the moustache 

• Great scene OHall with Marry me etc was really yucky and great villian vibes

• Beautiful scene Holly and Sophie

• TECH CREW: For the crowd sound effect turn volume down just a touch

• Reactions from actors when Will talks about R & J plot need to be much bigger

• "That's your cue" Great save Zac

• Great R & J kisses - super funny and excellent energy Geordie each time you needed to interrupt 

• Zac try to keep a straight face I know it's hard

• Cooper I also know it's hard but when you are doing the high pitch voice you need to project more so we can really hear you

• The "I weren't that bad" line was hilarious Cooper

• Fantastic boat scene!!!! Love it

• Emmy really need to have hair off your face as when you turn to the side we can't see you so keep tucking behind your ears or pin back.

• Bed for Viola's bedroom can be more front on so we can see but be careful not to trip over it. Jake please remind me to explain show you what I mean by this

• Love the look to the audience Geordie at the end of Act 2 really works.

ACT TWO

• 
  

• Careful not to trip on blocks Geordie when you come up at start of Act 2

• Only if you are both comfortable Emmy and Geordie, need you to be more hands on with each other in the first scene

• Hilarious Willhemina scene

• Vivat needs to be HEAPS louder

• Emmy don't forget about the head "donut" for the court scene when you are presented to the Queen

• Great character work Soph as the Queen a lot more power and control

• "No one will recognise me here" great comic timing. Be on earlier Archie and Charlie so you are saying the line when on stage

• "Why hello young lady" very funny

• EVERYONE LOOK UP A LOT MORE WITH THE AUDIENCE

• When the 4 of you have swords in R & J and you are facing off turn your bodies to the audience more and don't be so side on

• TECH CREW: Really need to pump the volume for music in the fight/chase sequence and it doesn't matter if we can't hear the lines that well. 

• Nick amazing energy when you get angry but try for how you did it in the dress rehearsal as that was perfect last night yelling for too long and I don't want you to hurt your voice

• Jake great eye contact with the audience when you let them know you saw them kissing

• Great save with the candle Nick!! Didn't matter you went on and then off

•  Holly beautiful monologue great connection with audience

• Music lower at the end of Holly monologue

• Second tavern scene was too slow. Check lines

• Great moment and  reaction when the  wife reveal

• Good impro  Lila with  my lady

• Great drunk Wessex  OHall

• Amazing  ghost  scene  Geordie and  OHall

• Geordie and Emmy as a general note  try some  front on acting , even with  Geordie standing  behind Emmy, hands on waist and facing audience more

• Will C bring it down a little with end angry scene, find the light and shade, how else can you show that you are angry? Don't flick suspenders even though it's funny but takes too much away from the moment

• TECH CREW: Music a little quiter for Sophie's monologue

• When you turn to go up stairs really need project your voice so we don't lose the lines

• Master Kent, Queen Elizabeth asks you to come and she's pretending you are a male, so go to curtsey but then bow instead

• "Cor Fanks" great line delivery Jake

• Emmy stand more face on

• Alex if you come on at the wrong time just stay there

REMINDERS

Hi everyone. Just a reminder that the bios are due today. 

Geordie, Archie, Sophie, Jack, Oscar S, O'Hall, Sam C, Jake, Jackson, Zac, Xavier and Alex need to complete this. 

Thanks to everyone else who has written theirs. Just a reminder to wear/bring a white t-shirt for your head shot photo on Saturday. 

Be on time for rehearsals! We are starting at 9.30am so be ready to go on stage then. 

If I don't get your bio I will write one for you and you won't want that! 

Also no scripts in hand on Saturday so learn your lines!

Dear Parents and Cast members of Shakespeare in Love,

I can't believe we have 3 weeks of rehearsals left till show time! This is where the rubber hits the road. 

REHEARSALS

Please ensure you attend ALL rehearsals and if you can not please email myself and Ms Bettison. Work and sport should not take priority from next week onwards. You have committed to this and it's so important to not let your cast mates down or us. 

CONFIRMATION OF FRIDAY NIGHT SHOW

We are excited to confirm an additional show that will take place on Friday 11th April. Bump out will occur straight after the final performance so students will need to stay behind to help out and then we can enjoy our holidays! 

OPEN NIGHT REHEARSALS

We will be holding a special open rehearsal for our huge OPEN NIGHT at Marist College. This is also the day the costumes arrive so we will certainly get some of you dressed up for this rehearsal. Please arrive at the Veritas Theatre at 3.45pm. We will begin our rehearsals at 4.00pm and will run till 7.00pm with some small breaks so please bring some food and water.

Tickets will go on sale this FRIDAY!! Seats are not allocated. Here is the link for tickets. Please encourage all your friends and family to attend and support you and celebrate all the hard work you have put in as well as how brilliant the play will no doubt be! 

SATURDAY REHEARSAL

Our first Saturday will take place this weekend. We are starting ACT 1 at 9.30am sharp so you need to be there at least 9.15am to be ready to walk onto stage at 9.30am. We will run the entire of ACT 1. Thank you to those of you that have given notice and reasons as to why you will be absent. I expect to see everyone else there. If you do not attend roles in future productions will be in doubt.

TERM 1 2025

Week 3 UPDATE

1. We have been soooo impressed with how well you are learning your lines and the script. It makes such a difference to the rehearsal process when you don't have a script in your hand so keep it going! Aim to be totally off script by the end of week 5.

2. Please check the rehearsal schedule each week and each morning on Tuesday and Wednesdays. We are making great progress and have almost finished blocking Act 1! There have been changes to what we are rehearsing this week so please check. 

3. This Wednesday (19th Feb) is an ALL CAST rehearsal as we will aim to run all of Act 1 in "draft form" and see where the holes are. We will also be taught our tavern workers song, will also learn a few more songs and go over the choreography so it's important for you all to be there. If you can't make it please email me. 

4. On Wednesday we will also be taking your costume measurements as I will be going to Sydney this weekend to select the costumes! HAZZAH!

End of 2024 update

TERM 4 Week 18: 

Dear Parents and Cast members of Shakespeare in Love,

I hope this email finds you all well. Thank you for all you efforts thus far and Ms Bettison and I have been really impressed with how quickly you have understood the play and your characters.

Remember that the most important thing is to LEARN YOUR LINES over the summer break. The quicker you are off script, the quicker we can get into effective rehearsals. We only have 9 weeks to be ready to perform in Week 10 next term so I can’t stress how essential this is for you and the company – don’t be that person who lets others down because you didn’t make the effort to learn your lines!! A lot of unnecessary stress can be avoided if you learn your lines in time. So that message is now clear!

Please regularly check our production website as this will be the main source of information. I have placed a PDF copy of the script on the website. FINAL SCRIPT If you have not picked up your script you can come and do this asap. See myself or Ms Bettison. Also the rehearsal schedule is a live document so always check that for rehearsals each week for details and any changes. It is your responsibility to put your script in a folder or have it bound at Officeworks, highlight your lines etc. Even though you are aiming to be off script you will need to bring your script to rehearsals with a pencil to take notes that will be given to you.
