Google for Education is a collection of online tools students use for schoolwork. Students sign in with their school Google account to access tools such as Google Classroom, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
What is Google Classroom?
Google Classroom is where teachers can post assignments, announcements, materials, links, and resources. Students can view their work, complete assignments, and turn them in electronically.
What is Google Drive?
Google Drive is the student’s online storage space. Files created in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides are saved to Drive automatically. Students can access their files from any device when signed in to their school Google account.
What is Google Docs?
Google Docs is similar to Microsoft Word. Students use it to write reports, essays, notes, and other assignments. Work saves automatically while they type.
What is Google Slides?
Google Slides is similar to Microsoft PowerPoint. Students use it to create presentations and projects. Students can add text, pictures, videos, animations, and other content.
What is Google Sheets?

Does my child need to click “Save”?
Usually, no. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides automatically save changes to Google Drive while the student is working online.
How does my child find an assignment?
Students should begin in Google Classroom. They can select the appropriate class and look under Classwork for assignments, materials, and resources posted by their teacher.
What is the difference between Classroom and Drive?
Think of Google Classroom as the classroom and Google Drive as the backpack. Classroom tells students what they need to do, while Drive stores the files they create and receive.
Can students share files with teachers or classmates?
Yes. Google files can be shared with others when appropriate. Sharing permissions determine whether another person can view, comment, or edit the file. Students should follow their teacher’s directions when sharing schoolwork.
Can more than one student work on the same file?
Yes. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides allow multiple students to work on the same file at the same time when collaboration is enabled.
Can students see work they already turned in?
Yes. Students can return to the assignment in Google Classroom to see submitted work, teacher comments, grades when posted, and returned assignments.
What should my child do if they cannot find a file?
First, check Google Drive and use the search bar at the top. Students can also check Recent, Shared with me, and the original assignment in Google Classroom.
Can parents log into their child's Google Classroom?
Parents generally do not need to log in as their child. Schools may use Google Classroom guardian features to provide parents or guardians with information about student assignments. Parents should not complete or submit work through the student's account.
Do students need Microsoft Word or PowerPoint at home?
For most Google-based assignments, no. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides work through a web browser, so students can create and edit schoolwork without purchasing Microsoft Office.
What should we do when something isn't working?
Start by checking that the student is signed into the correct school Google account. Refresh the page, close and reopen the browser, and try the assignment again. If the problem continues, take a screenshot of the error message and contact the school for assistance.
