What to Expect in ELA
Daily Language Review (DLR)
DLR is a weekly review packet of language, grammar, and writing skills. It consists of five days worth of questions to practice these skills.
A new packet will be given each Monday and will be due on Friday. This packet will be checked daily, and students are to check their work with a red pen and make the necessary corrections. This packet is worth 10 points.
Schedule of Checking DLR on a normal 5-day week:
Monday - DLR packet is given, Day 1 is for homework
Tuesday - Day 1 is checked in class, Day 2 is for homework
Wednesday - Day 2 is checked in class, and Day 3 is for homework
Thursday - Day 3 is checked in class, and Days 4 and 5 are for homework
Friday - Days 4 and 5 are checked in class, and the packet is turned in for a grade.
Students are graded on attempting each day and for making the necessary corrections. In order for the student to receive full credit, I must see:
The attempts were written in pencil and followed the directions.
Check marks and "X" marks in red pen. If mistakes are made, the students must FULLY write out the corrections in red pen.
Their name is written at the top of the packet when turned in.
Students will receive a point deduction each time these expectations are not met.
Homework
Homework will be assigned throughout the year.
Homework besides DLR will be assigned if needed and will be checked the next day in class.
Homework is worth 5 points, incomplete homework is 3 points, and no attempt or missing homework is 0 points.
Homework CANNOT be made up for partial credit if the student was present for both days (ex: when homework was assigned and when homework was due).
Please keep up with your student's assignment pad.
Practice Guides for ELA Tests
Practice guides are practice problems for lessons learned in the Grammar Workshop book. These guides are a review of each Grammar lesson that will be featured on the test. This will help the student to practice these skills and to see what they need further assistance with.
The practice guide will feature terms and definitions that the student will need to know for the test. All terms and definitions come from the lessons in the Grammar Workshop book.
The directions for the practice problems on the practice guide are the same directions featured on the test. This way students will know what is expected from them on the test.
Practice guides are given a few days before the test.
Practice guides are given, completed, and checked in class. It is the student's responsibilty to make the necessary corrections and to prepare for the test.
Tests
ELA Tests vary in point value.
ELA Tests will consist mostly of three lessons at a time. Students will be given 4 to 5 questions per lesson to prove understanding of the skill.
Terms and definitions will be featured in a matching section of the test.
