Roofing work is needed at both Memorial and Maywood Avenue Schools to keep our buildings dry and safe. The roofs are already beyond their life expectancy. If we don’t address the situation proactively, the buildings are at risk for damage and costly emergency repairs that would fail to resolve the ongoing issues.
Updated HVAC systems would improve air quality, heating and energy efficiency. The new rooftop equipment and classroom units would also support the addition of air conditioning at both schools. Students and staff members would have the same level of comfort, and relief from allergies and asthma, that they have at home and in most public spaces. Modernized climate control would create a better learning environment year-round and eliminate the frequent need for heat-related early dismissals during summer programs.
Six modular classrooms at Memorial School would give us space and flexibility to accommodate our growing student population. Enrollment is trending upward, particularly among students who work one-on-one with staff members in the Multiple Abilities Program. Adding space would keep students in their neighborhood school and avoid the considerable costs of paying out-of-district tuition for students we are not able to serve. Modular classrooms are a cost-efficient option to more effectively serve all students and maintain the small class sizes that our community values.
An existing science lab at Maywood Avenue School would be renovated into a STEM Lab/Makerspace that would give students more opportunities to work collaboratively on hands-on and tech-based projects. Supporting a stronger foundation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) will help Maywood students stay competitive with their peers as they move on to high school and college.
Revamping the obsolete fire safety systems is part of our commitment to protecting students. Replacement parts for the current system are no longer manufactured, so repairs are not an option. New, responsive equipment would offer more peace of mind.
Maywood Public Schools is ready to invest in the buildings that have served generations of our children. We need to update and improve the systems that keep things running smoothly and add space to accommodate our growing population and today’s learning standards. If the referendum passes, the district will receive significant state aid for these projects, reducing the impact on local taxpayers.
