Class Overview
-In this class we will learn how to think like a geographer and explore the people, places and cultures of the Earth.
-Being a geographer requires wearing many hats- physical and environmental scientist, economist, historian and diplomat (just to name a few)!
-Learning how to look at local and global issues, as well as creatively and critically working towards solutions, will all be part of the fun and challenge of this course. I look forward to exploring our world with you!
Based on the Michigan standards for Social Studies, some of the questions we will explore during this course are:
How do humans use and shape their environment?
How does culture influence the daily lives of people?
What challenges do governments face when addressing global issues and what international cooperation is needed to do so?
How do individuals and groups develop an action plan to address or inform others about issues at a local, national, or global scale?
About Me
I grew up in Mayville, then went to college to study international business.
I was drawn to travel and education and I moved to Spain to teach after I graduated college. I also lived in Ireland for two years where I earned a master’s degree in social sciences.
I am excited and grateful to bring my international and interdisciplinary experiences to the 6th and 7th grade Social Studies classroom in my hometown of Mayville- Go Wildcats!
Teaching Philosophy
As a teacher I believe:
All students are gifted and it is my privilege to help them discover what contribution and passion they have to bring to our classroom and the world!
Student ideas and experiences are valuable and I have as much to learn from them as they learn from me.
Students often engage more through experiential and hands-on learning that makes connections between the content, their interests, their learning needs and their everyday lives. I will work to consciously make these connections and make learning joyful!
