I hope taking this advanced certification course demonstrates my commitment to continual improvement in my skills as an instructor generally, and in distance education specifically. It is already clear that online instructing is experiencing a very rapid development driven not only by technological advances, but also by pedagogical advances. With the need to drive more use of distance education in nearly every higher education context, more attention is being paid to how distance education can be more effective. The results of that attention, and research, will undoubtedly drive development in how we teach.
My teaching career is now just six years old, and I have felt it has been a continual process of learning from the beginning. The transition from the classroom to online teaching was one bit step. College certification, at College of the Desert, was the next step. This advanced certification course has unquestionably driven a good deal more professional growth.
I feel that the current task is to incorporate much more of what I have learned into my current course. There were so many different improvements that could be made, and the course is ready for a top-to-bottom revision. Naturally, the course content won’t change so much given the requirements for learning objectives. Yet, the manner in which that content is delivered can be improved.
I hope to continue my professional development in online education through two areas in particular: First, I would like to expand to at least one other course, outside of business law, and to use that expansion as an opportunity to develop a distance education experience that reflects the current standard. Second, I would like to develop resources in the open license context that would completely replace the current textbook. A survey course on business law does not change material so often that new editions of a textbook are needed too frequently. It is an area where open access is very possible, allowing for a reduced threshold for students to take the class (from a cost perspective) and also allowing students and others to collaborate on the content for a more inclusive, multifaceted approach.
In this video I have interviewed an international student who has had experience with online courses. I learned that flexibility is a huge benefit for distance education students, but on the other hand there is the risk that the teacher risks that they "disappear" if they do not keep frequent contact with their students.
