Tennessee’s science education programs aim to develop a population of scientifically informed and curious citizens equipped for the challenges of the 21st century. The Tennessee Academic Standards for Science provide rigorous, relevant, and locally adaptable guidance for creating curricula that foster deep understanding of scientific disciplines and their connections to mathematics, communication skills, and the world around us. Students are encouraged to engage with scientific phenomena, ask meaningful questions, and conduct investigations independently or collaboratively to build knowledge and skills. The standards emphasize critical thinking, data analysis, problem-solving, and effective communication, enabling students to apply scientific principles in real-world contexts. Through these experiences, students become prepared for post-secondary pursuits, career opportunities, and lifelong learning in a rapidly evolving world.

6th Grade Science Standards

The sixth-grade academic standards in Tennessee define the essential knowledge and skills students need to prepare for higher education and future careers. Grounded in research and aligned with the National Research Council’s Framework for K–12 Science Education, these standards integrate core scientific content with hands-on practices. The sixth-grade curriculum emphasizes the role of energy in ecosystems, natural resources, and Earth processes, highlighting the interconnectedness of oceans, weather, and climate in shaping ecosystems. Science literacy is a key focus, requiring students to analyze reliable sources and construct evidence-based arguments, such as in standard 6.LS2.3. By the end of the year, students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in both content knowledge and science practices, laying the groundwork for future STEM learning.

The Instructional Focus Documents for Science: The Disciplinary Core Ideas outline two key approaches to science education: Learning Progressions and Facets of Student Thinking. K-8 science standards are structured as progressions that align with Component Ideas from A Framework for K-12 Science Education (NRC, 2012). Each Component Idea is introduced with a description of its main concepts and a learning progression across grade levels. The standards include grade-appropriate scientific concepts and common student ideas, which reflect students’ attempts to understand the world based on prior experiences. Teachers are encouraged to expand on these common ideas by addressing misconceptions and incorporating observations from their own classrooms.

6th Grade Science Standards Overview

The Tennessee Science Standards are organized by disciplinary core ideas (DCIs), which are color-coded for easy navigation. Each standard includes its number, full text, component idea, and suggestions for three-dimensional instruction, though these suggestions are not prescriptive. The component ideas link standards to grade-band endpoints within the framework that inspired them. The Science Standards Reference Guide supports the Tennessee Science Standards by providing quick insights into three-dimensional instruction and the progression of science education. Teachers are encouraged to use the guide as a supplemental tool and explore the full Framework for K-12 Science Education for a deeper understanding.

Science Instructional Model Strategies

Instructional Model Strategies in science focus on engaging students in hands-on, inquiry-based learning to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Teachers can us the 5E model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) to guide lessons, allowing students to build understanding through active participation and reflection. Strategies like project-based learning and collaborative group work help students apply scientific concepts to real world scenarios. Incorporating technology, such as simulations and data analysis tools, further enhance student learning and prepares them for advance scientific exploration.

Cross Cutting Concepts

Across all disciplines, there are crosscutting concepts which unify all of the disciplines of science. Crosscutting concepts represent one of the three dimensions of science instruction. As a student’s science schemas become increasingly complex, so does their ability to see the connections between seemingly dissociated ideas. These seven crosscutting concepts will look different depending on the development of the student. Growth in math ability and scientific literacy promote discussions of more complex connections.

Progression of Science and Engineering Practices

Rigid adherence to teaching the scientific method as the dogma of scientific activity presents an incomplete representation of the activities of a scientist. At any moment of time, it is likely that the activities of a scientist are described by at least one of these eight, named practices. These practices should not be seen as a linear series of steps, but rather a group of snapshots. The science and engineering practices are one of the three dimensions of three-dimensional science instruction. There are two ways that the practices are divided. First, each practice is separated into applications to science and applications to engineering. The practices are then divided to describe how the practice evolves on pace with a student’s learning.
