There are always events that run longer in term or that the Interact Member can volunteer for on their own. These events are generally filled by directly contacting the organization that sponsors the event(s). These are sometimes referred to by Interact as "Initiative" events. They can include regularly volunteering at a nursing home, reading to children at the library, being a Big Brother/Big Sister or providing tutoring services here at the high school or one of the other Maumee school building. When you participate in an initiative event, make sure that you log your hours.
(1) MAUMEE HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI BUILDING TOURS
Mrs. Hyndman, the Director of Development and Alumni Relations, is looking for 3 dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to provide building tours to Maumee High School alumni 3-5 times during the school year. The volunteers would meet the alumni at the front doors and take them around the building while describing their experience at Maumee High School and listening to the alumni experience. These volunteers would also work with Mrs. Hyndman to develop a "scavenger hunt" in which alumni can check off items that they see during the tour. Mrs. Hyndman has an office in the Guidance office.
(2) PEER TUTORS
Mr. Kikolski is looking for peer tutors every trimester from 2:30 - 3:30 pm. You can volunteer 1, 2, 3, or more evenings per week. It is best if you commit to a certain schedule so that Mr. Kikolski can count on you. Example - every Tuesday of the trimester. Every hour of peer tutoring that you complete can be logged as a volunteer hour.
(3) BIG BROTHERS / BIG SISTERS
Mr. Osier, the guidance counselor at Wayne Trail Elementary will need high school students to serve as big brothers and big sisters for 4th and 5th grade students. Serve as a role model, read to the students, and help them to learn responsibility and compassion. Mr. Osier schedules the dates but volunteers are typically asked to give 1 hour per week right after the Wayne Trail school day.
