University of Richmond offers a M.Ed. option that is designed to meet the needs of working educators: Curriculum & Instruction. The part-time graduate education program offers a mix of in-person, online asynchronous, online synchronous and hybrid classes. New Areas of Emphasis Enjoy the flexibility of a fully online program with the University of Virginia while exploring one of ten areas of emphasis. Mary Baldwin University
To help address the shortage of qualified teachers throughout the Commonwealth, Mary Baldwin University is pleased to offer programs that lead to licensure and/or master’s degrees. Included in this email is a flyer that shares the many routes we provide to accommodate any student as they begin or continue their journey to become teachers.
Post Baccalaureate Teaching License (PBTL) are for those who have a degree and wish to obtain a license in many endorsement areas.
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is for those who have an undergraduate degree and wish to obtain a license and a higher degree.
Provisional License Teaching Certificate (PLTC) are for those teaching on a provisional license. They will take needed courses at MBU at the master’s degree level. Minimum of 12 semester hours is required for this option.

UVA: Online Special Education General Curriculum Graduate Certificate
This graduate certificate is designed to equip K-12 teachers with the knowledge and skills to address the needs of students with disabilities in the general curriculum classroom. Courses can be taken for recertification, professional development or to add an endorsement to your current PK-3, PK-6, middle grades, or secondary license. Longwood: Special Education Add-On Endorsement
Join Longwood for their online professional development and acquire the expertise necessary to support students with diverse learning needs. Take courses for recertification and professional development to add an endorsement to your license. The endorsement is 15 credits and can be completed in three semesters. ODU: Special Education Endorsement
Old Dominion University offers grant funding/discounts for qualified Virginia school division personnel seeking endorsement in special education: general curriculum K-12. Teachers with valid provisional special education: general curriculum licenses are eligible and other school personnel with bachelor’s degrees may be eligible. Mary Baldwin University: Special Education Cohort
MBU offers an online cohort program with a deeply discounted tuition rate of $325 per credit hour. The cohort covers any of these options:
Add-On Special Ed: General Curriculum for Elementary Ed (for those holding an active VA PK-6 Elementary Ed endorsement);
Add-On Special Ed: General Curriculum for Middle Ed (for those holding an active VA Middle Ed core content endorsement);
Add-On Special Ed: General Curriculum for Secondary Ed (for those holding an active VA Secondary Ed core content endorsement); or
K-12 General Curriculum (for those seeking the “full” Special Ed endorsement to add to any active VA teaching license, except CTE).
Master of Education Non-Licensure Special Education –30 semester hours with two electives (for those who already hold a Special Education license or do not want licensure, just the degree)
A student may take just the courses for the Add-ons to add the endorsement or complete the Master of Education program providing licensure and a Master’s degree. The licensure programs are available to any licensed teacher in Virginia (with a collegiate or post-graduate professional license, but not a CTE or provisional license), and is designed to be completed in about 3 semesters. This Master’s program is also available without the licensure option. Virginia Consortium for Teacher Preparation in Vision Impairment
The Universities of George Mason, Radford, and Old Dominion offer an approved program that serves individuals with bachelor’s degrees who wish to become teachers of the visually impaired. Completion of the program results in a teaching endorsement in visual impairments and blindness K-12. Applicants need not hold a current teaching license. Virginia Consortium for Teacher Preparation in Special Education Adapted Curriculum
ACSD Consortium is comprised of the Universities of George Mason, Radford, James Madison, Virginia Commonwealth, and Old Dominion. This program is designed to accelerate the training for teachers with newly-issued provisional licenses and to increase the number of fully endorsed teachers by providing training to full-time pre-service personnel. Earn a graduate certificate from Virginia Commonwealth University. The Post-master’s Certificate for Reading Specialist is designed for students who wish to gain state licensure as a reading specialist in kindergarten through high school settings. The Post-master’s Certificate for Reading Specialist requires a minimum of 24 total graduate credit hours.
VCU: M.Ed. Reading Specialist Program
The M.Ed. in reading, reading specialist concentration provides prospective reading specialists with integrated experiences in all aspects of the reading curriculum, ranging from preschool to adult levels. This nationally-accredited and VBOE-approved program promotes a passion for lifelong reading education, embracing literacy practices across all levels. The online reading program offers students a high level of flexibility for managing their time and coursework. The program features interactive dialogues, asynchronous online discussions, synchronous online conversations and coaching opportunities.
W&M: Reading Specialist Endorsement Program
William & Mary offers a post-professional online certificate for teachers who currently hold a master’s degree but would like to add a reading specialist endorsement. UVA: Reading Specialist Program
The Masters of Education program in Curriculum & Instruction – Reading Education at UVA is a pathway for adding the K12 reading specialist endorsement to your Virginia teaching license. Our program is designed for reading practitioners to strengthen their understanding of science-based reading research and evidence-based literacy instruction for all students, including those with dyslexia or other reading difficulties. All courses are available online and the degree can be completed full-time in one year or part-time in 2-4 years.

Longwood University has an exciting professional development opportunity for teachers in either the Prince William or Hampton Roads areas who want to earn their School Librarianship endorsement or master’s degree. Starting Fall 2022, participants can be a part of a new cohort within driving distance of either area! Hybrid classes meet from one to five Saturdays each semester, depending on the course.
