Program Pre-requisites:
Current, valid State of Wisconsin EMT License
Current, valid CPR certification
The Milwaukee Area Technical College EMS program recognizes the importance of a structured, transparent, and equitable enrollment process. Recognizing this, this process was specifically designed to define the program’s internal procedure regarding seat allocations. This policy applies to all prospective students, sponsoring agencies, cohorts, and programs.
To be considered for program admission, all applicants MUST:
Hold a current, valid Wisconsin EMT license.
Hold a current, valid Healthcare Provider BLS CPR card that remains current through the end date of the program.
Agree to all clinical requirements listed which include a State of Wisconsin Caregiver Background Check, Healthcare BID, DMV abstract, health screening, and health prerequisites. Due dates for these items will be discussed at the in-person orientation.
Clinical requirements are subject to change based on public health emergencies, site-specific criteria, etc.
When the number of qualified petitioners exceeds the enrollment cap for the program, the seat selection process is applied.
Summer cohort - April 1st through April 30th.
January cohort - October 1st through October 31st. *Changes to the Fall 2025 petition process changes will be implemented related to TCS 10.07 criteria are forthcoming.

Petition Application Instructions
STEP 1: Submit an MATC student application by clicking here APPLY NOW. Applications may be submitted anytime.
STEP 2: Submit all required documentation as requested by MATC Registration, Admissions, Pathway, or other department/office.
STEP 3: Submit a petition application for the upcoming cohort during the petition window.
Petition applications will not be considered if Step 1 and Step 2 are incomplete.
STEP 4: Eligible applicants will be offered a seat in the specific paramedic cohort, up to capacity.
Students will be notified of their status in the program via their student MATC Gmail address within 14 days of the petition window closing.
Applicants who have been offered a seat initial offer must reply to the program within 3 days of the email timestamp, accepting or declining the seat.
Applicants are expected to closely monitor their MATC student email account including spam folders. The program will hold an offered seat if an applicant does not monitor their MATC email. If no response is received, the seat offer is forfeited.
STEP 5: Register for classes in self-service
Must register in the paramedic core courses before due dates below.
May 15: Summer cohort
December 1: January cohort
Failure to register by the due date will forfeit your seat.
The program will form a student selection committee that may be composed of program administration, faculty, the program medical director, and Pathway staff. The selection committee members will assign all the qualified petitioners to one of five groups.
The petition date, the following criteria, and the overall number of available seats all play a role in determining seat allocation, in that order:
Group 1: 24% of seats are reserved for EMS agency-sponsored students.
Group 2: 24% of seats are allocated to students who petitioned in a previous term.
Group 3: 24% of seats go to students currently enrolled in the Paramedic Technician AAS program who have fulfilled the following program requirements:
Gen Anatomy & Physiology (BIOSCI-177)
(or) BIOSCI-201 Anatomy and Physiology 1
Mathematical Reasoning (MATH-134)
(or) MATH-135 Qualitative Reasoning
(or) Any 200-level MATH course
Introduction to Diversity Studies (SOCSCI-17)
(or) Any 200-level SOCSCI course
Group 4: 4% of seats are allocated at the discretion of the program.
Group 5: The remaining 24% of seats are assigned based on the application date after all other categories have been filled.
Students will be notified about their status in the program within 14 days of the petition window closing. Be sure to check your MATC student email account.
Students who are offered a seat must accept or decline within 72 hours of the email notification timestamp. If no response is received, the offer expires, and the seat is forfeited.
Students must register for the paramedic core courses before the due dates below.

Any seats that open after the petition process is completed will be filled at the program's discretion. Any necessary deviation from this process will be at the sole discretion of the program, on an individual basis, and should not be assumed as routine or repetitive. Sponsoring agencies should communicate their intent to sponsor a student via email to Dr. Alyssa Cahoon, Program Director, at cahoona@matc.edu.
