Peer Mediation

Peer Mediation is a method of conflict resolution and a form of communication between two or more students. When an issue arises between two students, typically at the core of the issue is poor communication or the lack of communication between those students.

Having the students sit down 1 on 1 with the counselor, to respectfully talk about a conflict to each other, is an effective form of communication amongst students.

What are some common and ineffective forms of communication amongst students?

  • message through social media

  • talking about someone behind someone's back

  • gossip

  • yelling across the lunchroom

  • comments in passing in the hallway or at your locker

  • inappropriate non-verbals (rolling eyes, inappropriate gestures, etc.)

Many conflicts arise from these types of communication and we encourage our students to reach out to his/her counselor to help resolve any conflicts that may arise.

All peer mediations are strictly confidential. The main goal of a peer mediation is never to force students to become friends, rather to equip students with the necessary skills to effectively communicate when a potential conflict occurs in the future.
