Third grade students are given independent reading time every day in class. Students are encouraged to read books in their assigned reading range (ZPD range) and take Accelerated Reader tests on them. Their ZPD range is assigned by the STAR test and is designed for maximum student reading growth. Students are assigned a nine-week reading goal and are expected to maintain an 85% overall average on all the tests they take. Students reading at a 90% or above may read books above their ZPD range as along their ability to comprehend the material is not a factor. I do ask that students share their books with me before starting them if they are above the given range. In order for your child to reach his/ her maximum reading growth this year we will need your support, my ability to guide instruction, and most importantly your child's practice and determination.
Many stories and books from our reading textbook, school library, and classroom library have Accelerated Reader tests prepared for them. Accelerated Reader can be taken anytime the students have access to the computer lab or our classroom computer. Students may take more than one test at a given time. No assistance will be given on the test, so it is very important that students choose books that are on their individual reading levels. If you would like to see if there is a test on a book you already own at home, simply click on this link: www.arbookfind.com. Some of our favorite book series are pictured below. These books have links to the authors' websites as well!
