My small counseling groups are inspired by the 5 competencies for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) as defined by CASEL (the Collaborative for Social and Emotional Learning). CASEL has been in the social and emotional learning industry for over 20 years, and has extensive research to back their suggestions for SEL programs and resources. I have listed the 5 competencies below, as well as some key components for each competency. My hope is that providing counseling groups in these areas will help students to grow in their SEL knowledge and skills. CASEL also knows that learning happens inside and outside of the classroom. You will also see that I have included a visual that represents SEL in all domains: classrooms (with SEL curriculum), schools (with schoolwide practices), as well as homes and communities (with partnerships).
