The Indian Education Formula Grant (Title VI) program is designed to address the unique cultural, language, and educationally-related academic needs of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students, including preschool children, who are:
A member of an Indian tribe or band, as membership is defined by the Indian tribe or band, including any tribe or band terminated since 1940, and any tribe or band recognized by the State in which the tribe or band resides;
A descendant of a parent or grandparent who meets the requirements described in paragraph of this definition;
Considered by the Secretary of the Interior to be an Indian for any purpose;
An Eskimo, Aleut, or other Alaska Native; or
A member of an organized Indian group that received a grant under the Indian Education Act of 1988 as it was in effect on October 19, 1994.
This federal program ensures that schools provide the quality education promised to Native students through Tribal treaties. Even if you don’t plan to use Title VI services, completing an ED 506 form for your eligible student increases the grant funds available to support all Native students and their families. These funds provide academic support and cultural programming for Native students. Each form submitted helps grow the program and ensures our school is meeting the educational responsibilities outlined in Tribal treaties.
