Speech & essay contests are not only for seniors.
Review the guidelines to the different contests below to determine if you
qualify to participate.
THE AMERICAN LEGION
High School Oratorical Scholarship Program
Sponsored by the Mukwonago American Legion Post #375
Summary of Scholarships: The contest is on four levels. Winners in each level will advance to next level.
Local: Interested students should have their speech prepared for the Post contest on Saturday. December 10th at 9:00 am at the Mukwonago Public Library. Scholarship Awards: 1st Place: $500, 2nd Place: $300, 3rd Place: $200, 4th Place: $100
County Contest: will be held on Saturday, January 7th at The Mukwonago Baptist Academy. Time TBD. Scholarship awards: 1st Place $100
District Contest: time and location TBD.
Regional/State: February 12th at Ripon College. Both regional and State finals are held on the same day. $600 scholarships to all contestants who advance from District to Regional. Regional winners' each receive $1,000 and advance that afternoon to state finals. State finals 1st Place: $2,000, 2nd Place: $1,500, 3rd Place: $1,000.
National: State winner advances to the National Finals, April 22-24 in Indianapolis, IN. Scholarship awards: 1st Place: $25,000, 2nd Place: $22,500, 3rd Place: $20,000.
The contest consists of two parts:
Prepared oration - an original 8-10 minute oration (no props) on some aspect of the US constitution with emphasis on a citizen's duties and obligations to our government. (The same prepared oration can be used in all contests).
Assigned topic - 3-5 minute oration on one of four Constitutional amendments. One will be randomly selected and that is the assigned topic. You must be prepared to speak on all four. The assigned topics are available at the American legion website:
