Lucas Hunter, otherwise know as Luca Lozano is the man behind Berlin record label Klasse Wrecks. He is a producer , DJ and graphic designer creating artwork for the labels he works under using the name "Planet Luke". Raised in Sheffield, UK, Lucas began his design career, attending Norton College, however after only nine months, Lucas dropped out due to the uninspiring briefs. Instead he moved to Cornwall where he attended Falmouth College of Arts for seven years. It was until six years later in 2004 when living in Brixton, Lucas began hosting his own parties and creating flyers for them. It was here when he found his own visual identity and style, "rough, raw and bold", were some of the words used by Lucas to describe his work when being interviewed by "stamp the wax" magazine.
Using the skills and styles gained from his degrees, combined with the influence of skate boarding, graffiti and 70's rave culture, Lucas began to create his own style. When looking at Lucas's posters and flyers the theme of non-traditional typography and retro grainy features are what first attracts the eye, however there is a lot more going on than one may think. At a first glance his work may seem messy with no particular style, however by constantly recreating his style without losing the nostalgic element of the retro 80's or bubble letter 70's influence, his work ultimately becomes more intersting, with no two pieces of work looking the same. Prehaps it is this mish-mash style (which clearly has no restrictions) that creates such an authentic feel in Lucas' work. In my opinion the work of Lucas' is so unique that it is hard to find somone today even close to his style, and because of this I think it would be a great oppurtunity to inroduce his work and style to the culture of rap and hip-hop as I believe by combining the two I will be able to create a vastly unique style that doesn't stray away from the roots of the genre of rap and hip-hop or Lucas' style, and instead uses the core elements of both to highlight and complement one another.
My responses
For my first poster I decided to use a two colour design, seen throughout Lonzano's work. After some experimenting I opted for blue and white as my palette as one of my main inspirations was the sky, influenced by this notion of clarity that Denzel Curry promotes in his album, "Melt my eyes see your future". Moreover their contrast created an eye catching look crucial for a poster.
I also thought it was crucial to replicate the vintage style with rough edges and grain seen throughout the poster. When working with the text it was crucial to find two fonts that looked different and bold, yet didn't oppose one another. I landed on using impact for the heading for its attention grabbing nature, and used the cyberion demo font along the side with a white stroke to create a clean retro look seen throughout Lonzano's designs. When editing the heading I added stars and a gradient as the theme of space and sci-fi is prevalent throughout Denzel Curry's music, with many songs taking influence from star wars.
Overall I think this poster was succesful in emulating the unique retro style of Lonzano whilst encapsulating the clients own features and influence.
I then used another photo of Denzel performing and removed the background. I did this by using the pen tool in order to be as detailed as possible
Next I made the image black and white and added noise from the filters panel. I added a colour threshold so that I had a stencil style photo.
I used the colour select tool to make the black portion of the photo blue as well as the back ground blue. Finally I cut out just the face and mic, and multiplied the image to get the final result.
I began by using a photo I took of Denzel Curry performing at Rough Trade. I used the pen tool to remove the background.
I made the image black and white, adjusted the contrast and then added noise in the filters panel. I put a threshold on the colours to make it 2 tones. To keep the outline I used the stroke effect around the layer.
To finish, used the colour selection tool to make the blacks the same blue seen throughout the poster and adjusted the outline stroke so that it was white in order to match my colour scheme.
I began the heading by creating multiple blue stars to go over the top of the "Impact" font to make it seem cut out. I then added a gradient overlay to the text.
I then made the text a smart object in order to add noise and a threshold to the text. I also added a stroke around the text.
Finally I used the colour selection tool to make the heading match the colour scheme of the poster.
To begin I used the cyberion demo font to use for my text.
I then displaced the text to add a rough edge to the text (it's hard to see in the image above), by downloading a rough paper texture.
Finally, I added a white stroke around the font, and changed the background to blue.
For my second poster I decided to use a three colour design, to once again keep the minimalistic element of Lonzano's work. I used the colours of the union jack as this gig was the first time Denzel had been to the United Kingdom. I also found that the blue and red contrasted really nicely against one another and the cream.
Once again I used grain to emulate the vintage style of Lonzano's work, this time on two cut out images I took of Denzel to create a handmade comic collage effect. The reason why I took influence from comics was because Denzel Curry uses many comic book references in his music, with his 2020 album cover for "Unlocked" being a cartoon/comic book design. It took me a while to choose the composition of my images however after some experimenting I landed on the one seen on the left. To continue the comic book style I made a star sticker that pops out as seen in many comic strips.
Overall I think this poster was also successful in emulating the Lonzano's style although different to my previous poster. Once again I used influence from my client to make my poster unique.
I began by selecting and editing photos from my photoshoot, changing the contrast, exposure and brightness.
I then made the image black and white, and once again changed the contrast. I also added noise to create a film/vintage style.
Using the colour select tool I made the blacks blue. I also used the pen tool to cut the subject out from the background to create a collage effect.
I created the star sticker by layering 3 stars I designed, 2 red and one white. Next I added the bold all caps font in a slanted manor, with jagged white strips behind them.
I made the border by using the dotted stroke tool in blue to surround the background. Next I added text in the cyberion demo font at the bottom and top of the border, along with the matching bold and big Denzel Curry text at the bottom.
Finally I arranged the composition of my poster. I found the two photos looked best slightly layered over eachother with a close up head shot of Denzel performing on bottom. I also liked how the red heading overlapped so I used the multiply tool to highlight this overlap by darkening the red. Finally I placed the sticker top right at an angle to create a natural handmade feeling to the design.
