The things that I think have worked well have been my two animated videos because they incorporate digital drawing using photoshop, photography, and premiere pro editing. However in my previous videos I feel I have been slightly limited by the amount of movement I a can have because I have been using the method of drawing frames one at a time. For this video I want to try using Blender, a 3d animating software, to allow me to create more detailed animations with more movement.
For this video I want to look more at pattern, because although every piece I have done has contained pattenred and textured imagery, in my previous videos I think the colour is more prominant than the patten. Therefore I think it would be interesting to create images constructed principally of imagery created from patterns.
Unknown Pleasures was the debut studio album by the English rock band Joy Division, released on 15 June 1979. The album cover was designed by Peter Saville. The pattern used on the cover was taken from a book found by Joy Division guitarist Bernard Sumner in Manchester Library, while on a lunch break. The diagram is a plot of the waves emitted by the first radio pulsar ever discovered, back in 1967, which ended up in the Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy.
Yannis Frier is a French Graphic designer and illustrator whose work includes posters for music festivals, magazines and album covers. He has a distinctive style that uses simple line patterns to create complex images. The movement and fluidity of the lines create dynamic pieces; a lot of his pictures seem like a moment frozen in time- they look like they could start moving at any moment, which is why I thought his work would be effective in a moving animated video. This artist links to my theme of pattern because of the way he uses line patterns to create the forms of images. The simplicity of his colour palette contrasts with the complexity of the patterns. I like the idea of a single line making up the entire image and the feeling of energy and endless possibility this creates.
My plan for this final piece is to make a short Video advertising the recent release of The deluxe edition of Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division. I will animate the video using the style of Yannis Frier as I think their pieces link nicely with the original album cover. My Overall Client will be Spotify again and the target audience will be people who are fans of this album- it might not be explicitly clear what the meaning is to people who are not familiar with the album's iconic cover
I photographed a range of flowers and trees to be drawn as part of this video, I wanted tall, unnaturally large plant life to create an effect of unstoppable growth stemming from the phone when the music begins, as if it creates a new world of limitless possibility.
Using the pictures from my photoshoot I first created a rough plan for what my image would look like. Then I traced each of the plants in a separate document using the brush tool, and put these drawings back into the original document. I inverted each layer from black to white and added a black background.
I exported this image and opened Blender. In Blender I created a new 2D animation document and in "object mode" created a "plane" (similar to a layer in photoshop) which covered the whole of the workspace. I changed the surface of the plane to my image- I made the image red so that when I traced it in white I could differentiate between the new and old lines. The "build modifier" animates the lines so they reform the way you drew them so they appear to draw themselves. For each section I created a new object layer so that I could change at what time certain pieces of the image started to be drawn - You can set the frame you want the animation to finish on so you can control the speed of each part. I set it so that each plant started to grow after the floor had reached the point where they begin.
I repeated this same method for other parts of the animation, such as the lines coming out of the phone and the text.
To create the walking animation I filmed myself walking through the scene and took a screenshot every couple of frames. I imported all the screenshots into photoshop and traced each one on separate layers- creating this long line of people walking. I then had to colour each picture of the person as well so that you could not see the background through them. I coloured in each person using the brush tool on a layer underneath and then merged the two layers together. Finally I created a video from this by selecting 'make frames from layers' in the video timeline panel. There were 112 frames for this part of the animation that each had to be drawn one at a time.
I wanted a close up shot of the lines to show the speed they are moving at during the opening of the video.
Firstly to make this I drew a line in pink to act as a guide for the animation. I then drew the very beginning of the line, then on another layer slightly more, and so on, having the line grow on each layer, and using the onion skin tool to tell how much I had drawn on the previous frame. I then continued to draw the same line over and over again, having the shape morph and change slightly over time. Finally I added about ten frames of very small, short lines travelling quickly backwards to make it seem like the main line is travelling forward and quickly, as if these are part of the background which are blurred by the fast camera movement.
For the phone animation I used the same method as the person walking animation: Taking multiple screenshots in Premiere Pro, importing the screenshots into Photoshop and tracing each part, then making each layer into a frame of a video.
For the recreation of the Album cover I used the same method I had used for the main image: Importing a coloured version into blender and tracing it, then adding the build modifier to animate it, removing the background and exporting to Premiere Pro.
I created a version of my image which had a large empty space on the side and Imported it along with my main video into Premiere pro. Once the animation of the flowers forming finished in the timeline I placed the long image in on top, but aligned so it is not noticeable. I then added position key frames so the image travels slowly to the left making it seem like the camera is moving right. The animation of the person travels from one side of the screen to the other, but I wanted it to appear as though the camera was following the person at the same speed they were walking. To do this I added Key frames to move the figure backwards at the same speed that the camera moved forwards so they stay in the centre of the frame
Finally I collected all the footage before adding sound- I had the sound begin on the frame that the phone screen switches to play and added a crossfade effect at the end so that the volume gradually gets lower as the video is ending. I added a Spotify logo at the end to link back to my over arching client. The Spotify logo was made on photoshop my drawing the animation one frame at a time on separate layers and then converting each layer into a frame.
I was pleased with this piece, I think it flowed smoothly and easily- It seems like the world is growing and sprouting from the phone. It starts from a single point and then branches out in multiple directions. The way the lines developed and grew exponentially, reflects the complex emotions and themes of the music which are released as the album begins. I think using Blender was very effective for creating more complex animated movement, as many of my previous pieces had only one part of it that moves, which can make it feel more relaxed, while this was more urgent and vibrant. This links to my theme of Type, Image colour and Pattern because, it full of developing and growing patterns which convene into neat structure, and then later morphs into type. If I had more time I would have liked to create multiple images using this style, and perhaps spend more time making the typography at the end more complex.
