Art & Design
At key stage 3, our learners follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme. Under the curriculum of the IB, students are encouraged to develop their critical thinking skills, nurture curiosity and develop the skills to solve complex problems. Our sequences of learning have been designed with the following MYP mission statement in mind:
"Involvement in the arts encourages students to understand the arts in context and the cultural histories of artworks, supporting the development of an inquiring and empathetic world view".
We consider year 7 to be a foundation year for our students: an opportunity to develop their understanding of art as a specialism, whilst developing their fine motor skills and confidence, with the intention that when they reach KS4 they have a skillset that will allow them to select their options safe in the knowledge that they are equipped for whichever discipline they choose.
Each semester throughout years 7 to 9, students are issued with an Knowledge Organiser for each subject. These documents contain all the knowledge students will require to support their learning and progress in their lessons. At the end of the semester, students complete a Knowledge Organiser assessment, helping the learners practice recall skills and informing our departmental planning with a focus on challenge, as well as identifying any misconceptions that may need addressing.
